Indian Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, confirmed on October 1, 2026, that Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar is recovering well after being seriously injured during an alleged mid-air attack. Ambassador Mittal visited Captain Machchhar and his family at a hospital in the UAE, expressing gratitude to the UAE government for its support and medical care.
“Very reassured to meet Capt Smit. Thank the UAE government for their support and medical care being extended,” Ambassador Mittal stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The Indian embassy in the UAE reiterated that it remains in close coordination with local authorities to ensure Machchhar's ongoing medical care and well-being.
Mid-Air Incident and Heroic Actions
Captain Machchhar sustained severe injuries when his co-pilot allegedly assaulted him within the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ1073. The incident occurred while the aircraft, carrying 174 people, was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the altercation, the plane experienced a dramatic descent, plunging nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds.
Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar heroically managed to open the cockpit door. This crucial action allowed passengers and crew members to intervene and overpower the co-pilot. Subsequently, two other Flydubai pilots, who were on board as passengers, took control of the aircraft and successfully landed it safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Global Recognition for Bravery
Captain Machchhar's quick thinking and bravery have drawn praise from international leaders. Both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have publicly commended him for his decisive actions that averted a potential catastrophe.
Earlier today, Captain Machchhar was airlifted to Abu Dhabi to receive advanced medical care for his injuries, where his recovery is now underway.
