Israel is set to bestow an honor upon Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his remarkable bravery during a critical mid-air emergency aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073. The announcement was made by Israeli envoy to India, Reuven Azar, highlighting Captain Machchhar's decisive actions that saved 174 lives.

The incident occurred on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, when Captain Machchhar was severely injured after being stabbed by his co-pilot within the cockpit. Following the attack, the aircraft entered a steep descent, creating a perilous situation for all on board.

Heroic Actions Averted Disaster

Despite his serious injuries, Captain Machchhar demonstrated extraordinary courage by managing to open the cockpit door. This crucial act allowed passengers and crew members to intervene and overpower the assailant. A second pair of Flydubai pilots, who were traveling as passengers, then took control of the aircraft and successfully landed it in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Envoy Reuven Azar lauded Captain Machchhar as a "great hero," emphasizing that his valor resonated deeply across Israel. "Israel does not forget its friends, those who are with Israel in times of crisis," Azar stated, affirming the country's commitment to recognizing the pilot's selfless act.

Pilot's Condition and Ongoing Investigation

According to Doron Spielman, spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Captain Machchhar, despite being covered in blood, mustered his last reserves of strength to ensure the cockpit door was opened. This act was pivotal in preventing what could have been a catastrophic aviation disaster.

Currently, Captain Machchhar is in stable condition and is receiving necessary medical attention at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General of India in Jeddah are closely monitoring his health and maintaining contact with his family, assuring them of all possible assistance. Saudi authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the full details.
