The bill, which passed the House by a margin of 262-159, empowers the President to impose sanctions on countries that continue to purchase oil and gas from Russia. This provision has drawn particular attention due to its potential economic implications for major energy importers like India and China.
Krishnamoorthi's Unique Stance
While all six Indian-American members of the House belong to the Democratic Party, Representatives Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, and Suhas Subramanyam all adhered to the party line by opposing the sanctions bill. Krishnamoorthi's vote marked a notable divergence, highlighting a complex interplay of foreign policy, energy security, and party loyalty.
Fifty-eight Democrats ultimately voted in favor of the act, indicating a split within the party on the issue of expanded Russia sanctions. The legislation reflects ongoing efforts by a segment of the US Congress to increase pressure on Moscow's energy economy.
Who is Raja Krishnamoorthi?
Raja Krishnamoorthi, 53, has represented Illinois’ 8th Congressional District since 2016. Born to immigrant parents, he grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and is an alumnus of Princeton University, where he earned a mechanical engineering degree, and Harvard Law School.
Before his tenure in Congress, Krishnamoorthi served as Special Assistant Attorney General in Illinois and was Vice-Chair of the Illinois Innovation Council. He also co-founded InSPIRE, a non-profit organization dedicated to training inner-city students and veterans in solar technology. In the House, he holds positions on several influential committees, including the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Krishnamoorthi is expected to retire from the House of Representatives in January next year.
