WhatsApp Rolls Out 'Smart Text Actions' for In-Chat Shortcuts: Save Contacts, Schedule Events, Navigate

· · 2 min read

WhatsApp is reportedly introducing 'Smart Text Actions,' a new feature that recognizes key information like phone numbers, dates, and addresses within chats. It offers instant shortcuts to save contacts, schedule events, or get directions directly from conversations, currently rolling out to select Android and iOS users.

WhatsApp is enhancing its user experience with the reported introduction of 'Smart Text Actions,' a feature designed to streamline interactions within chat conversations. This update aims to reduce the need for users to switch between the messaging app and other phone applications when dealing with actionable information shared in chats.

The 'Smart Text Actions' feature intelligently identifies various types of text, such as phone numbers, dates, times, email addresses, and physical addresses, directly within individual and group conversations. Once recognized, the app provides convenient shortcuts, allowing users to perform relevant actions with a single tap.

How Smart Text Actions Works

When a supported piece of information is detected in a WhatsApp message, it is subtly marked with a dotted underline. Tapping this highlighted text brings up a pop-up menu featuring a range of contextual actions. For example:

  • Phone Numbers: Users can quickly copy the number, save it to their contacts, or dial it directly.
  • Dates and Times: Options include copying the information or adding it to the phone's calendar, with the ability to create a new event.
  • Physical Addresses: Tapping an address can open it in a maps application, providing immediate directions.
  • Email Addresses: The feature can trigger the device's default email app, ready to compose a new message.

Users are not obligated to use these suggestions and can continue interacting with WhatsApp normally. While some of these actions were previously possible through longer presses or manual copying, 'Smart Text Actions' consolidates them into a more intuitive and organized interface.

Availability and Rollout

According to reports from WABetaInfo, 'Smart Text Actions' is currently being rolled out gradually to a select group of users on the latest versions of WhatsApp for both Android and iOS. As of now, WhatsApp has not made an official announcement regarding the feature's general availability, indicating it is still in a testing or phased deployment phase.

Future Enhancements

The messaging giant is also said to be testing a feedback option, where users might be prompted to indicate if a suggested action was useful. This suggests an ongoing effort to refine the feature based on user interaction and ensure its effectiveness.

This new functionality promises to make WhatsApp conversations more productive, transforming shared information into actionable insights without leaving the chat interface. It represents a significant step towards a more integrated and efficient messaging experience for millions of users worldwide.
