· · 2 min read

Former German foreign intelligence chief August Hanning, 80, has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, treason, and disclosing state secrets. A second former BND official was also detained for allegedly providing classified documents for payment.

Germany's former foreign intelligence chief, August Hanning, has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, disclosure of state secrets, and attempted treason. The 80-year-old, who previously led the country's BND foreign intelligence agency, faces charges that include operating as a secret service agent for a foreign power.

High-Profile Arrests Shake German Security

The arrest of Hanning marks a significant development in what some are calling Germany's most substantial espionage scandal of the century. Authorities detained Hanning following an announcement by Germany's federal prosecutor's office regarding the serious allegations.

Prosecutors accuse Hanning of acquiring classified information and using it to prepare analyses for a foreign intelligence officer. He is also alleged to have shared political information with a representative of this foreign agency over several years. While the specific foreign intelligence service has not been publicly identified, prosecutors have indicated the case does not involve Russia.

Hanning served as the head of the BND from December 1998 to November 2005. Following his tenure there, he transitioned to the Federal Interior Ministry, where he held the position of state secretary until November 2009.

Second Official Implicated in Document Leak

In connection with the same investigation, a second former high-ranking BND employee has also been taken into custody. This individual, who was Hanning's chief of staff during his time at the BND and later worked under him at the Interior Ministry until 2009, is accused of providing Hanning with hundreds of classified documents after Hanning had left the intelligence agency. Prosecutors allege these documents were supplied in exchange for payment, leading to charges of aiding and abetting attempted treason and espionage against the state.

Political Reactions and Calls for Investigation

The unfolding scandal has prompted strong reactions within Germany's political landscape. Konstantin von Notz, an opposition lawmaker and member of the oversight committee, described the allegations as "deeply troubling" and urged for a "swift and thorough investigation" into the matter.
