A deadly prison riot at a correctional facility in Negombo, Sri Lanka, has claimed the lives of 25 inmates and left over 100 injured. The violence, which began on Sunday, involved clashes between rival groups within the overcrowded prison, according to official reports.
Escalation and Fresh Clashes
The initial confrontation on Sunday quickly escalated, leading to widespread unrest. Authorities confirmed that fresh violence erupted on Monday after rioting inmates managed to seize firearms from the prison armory. This alarming development prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
To contain the volatile situation and restore order, the Police Special Task Force (STF) and dedicated riot control units were immediately deployed to the Negombo prison. Security measures around the facility were significantly tightened.
Investigations Underway
Preliminary findings suggest that the violence may have been triggered by a dispute between two factions: one allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities within the prison, and another group opposing such operations. This internal conflict appears to have been the catalyst for the deadly clashes.
AC Gajanayake, Media Spokesman for the Prisons Department, announced that a special investigation has been launched into the incident. The Commissioner General of Prisons has appointed a dedicated team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the causes and circumstances surrounding the unrest. Concurrently, a separate police investigation is also in progress.
Efforts to Restore Stability
In an effort to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence, three inmates identified as central to the unrest were transferred to the Pallansena Prison Camp on Monday. Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has requested a detailed report on the clashes, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
A magisterial inquiry into the incident was conducted on Sunday, aiming to gather immediate facts and establish accountability for the tragic events at the Negombo prison.
