India's Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are undergoing a significant transformation, evolving from mere cost-arbitrage centers into strategic hubs for product innovation, advanced engineering, and artificial intelligence (AI) development. This shift marks a new phase for the country's GCC ecosystem, as global enterprises increasingly entrust high-value functions to their Indian operations.
Rapid Growth and Strategic Mandates
According to a recent Zinnov report, the number of GCCs in India saw a substantial increase of approximately 32% between fiscal year 2021 and 2026, reaching an estimated 2,117 centers operating 3,728 distinct units. This expansion has also boosted employment, with over 2.36 million professionals now working within these centers. By FY26, the revenue generated by India's GCCs is projected to hit an impressive $98.4 billion.
A key indicator of this transformation is the changing nature of mandates. The report highlights that a remarkable 96% of GCCs established since FY21 commenced operations with a primary focus on product development, research and development (R&D), or engineering. This contrasts sharply with earlier models, where cost savings were the paramount objective.
Accelerated Maturity and High-Value Work
Newer GCCs are also demonstrating an accelerated path to maturity. Centers established between 2002 and 2015 typically took five to ten years to reach a mature operational level. In stark contrast, those set up since FY21 are achieving maturity in less than five years, reflecting enhanced strategic planning and investment.
The proportion of routine, commodity-oriented work within Indian GCCs has significantly declined since 2015, making way for sophisticated, cutting-edge R&D. Nearly half of India’s GCCs now perform frontier work at a level comparable to, or even exceeding, that of their respective global headquarters.
AI at the Forefront of Innovation
Artificial intelligence is a primary catalyst for this transition. India now hosts over 1,200 GCCs equipped with AI and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities. Notably, generative AI and agentic AI applications now constitute 52% of all AI use cases in Indian GCCs, surpassing traditional AI/ML applications for the first time.
Enterprises that are actively building new AI capabilities are assigning more complex and strategic work to their Indian centers compared to those merely adopting existing AI solutions. This trend underscores India's growing importance as a hub for advanced AI development.
Reshaping the Talent Landscape
The evolution of GCCs is profoundly reshaping India's talent market. The demand is shifting away from generic technology roles towards highly specialized capabilities that integrate AI engineering, deep domain expertise, product thinking, and enterprise leadership. India boasts a substantial pool of approximately 550,000 AI/ML professionals, with about half currently employed in GCCs, indicating significant potential for future growth and specialization.
Ultimately, India's next phase of GCC growth will not solely depend on increasing the number of centers or headcount. Instead, it will be driven by the country's ability to provide specialized talent, robust infrastructure, and a conducive operating environment capable of supporting increasingly complex and strategic global mandates.
