GST 2.0 Delivers Price Relief: Cars & Two-Wheelers Lead Consumer Savings

· · 2 min read

A new report reveals two-wheelers and cars saw the most significant price reductions under GST 2.0, with 26% and 25% of consumers reporting lower costs. This makes automobiles the primary segment benefiting from the tax reforms.

A recent study, "The Great Indian Wallet 4.0 – 2026," indicates that Indian consumers experienced the most substantial price relief from GST 2.0 reforms in the automobile sector. Two-wheelers and cars emerged as the top beneficiaries, with 26% and 25% of respondents, respectively, reporting a decrease in prices. This places high-value purchases at the forefront of perceived GST benefits.

Widespread Price Reductions Across Categories

While automobiles led the way, the study found that the impact of GST 2.0 extended across various consumer goods and services. Following two-wheelers and cars, smartphones and home appliances saw 22% of consumers reporting lower prices in each category. Medicines and healthcare products also offered significant relief, with 21% of consumers noting reduced costs. Essential daily items like food, groceries, and other daily-use products registered 19% reported price drops, and even housing materials, though at the lower end, showed 18% of consumers experiencing price relief.

Perceptions Differ by Demographics and Region

The report highlighted notable differences in how various demographic groups and regions perceived these price changes. Men, for instance, reported stronger price relief across nearly all categories compared to women. For two-wheelers, 28% of men reported lower prices versus 19% of women, and for cars, the figures were 26% for men and 17% for women.

Geographically, Tier-1 cities generally experienced the strongest impact from GST 2.0 across several categories, including two-wheelers, smartphones, and cars. Conversely, Tier-2 cities consistently reported the lowest levels of relief. Regionally, the East and West zones emerged as the strongest beneficiaries, with the West leading on two-wheelers and cars, and the East seeing the most relief for food, groceries, smartphones, and medicines. The Southern region, however, reported the least relief across almost all categories tracked.

Impact on Household Spending and Savings

Beyond price reductions, the study also explored how households utilized the perceived financial relief. A majority, 61% of respondents, reported no change in their spending or saving habits, suggesting that many maintained their existing financial routines. However, among the 39% who adjusted their behavior, 12% indicated they saved more, while another 12% increased spending on food quality. Additionally, 9% allocated more funds to children's education, and 7% prioritized health-related expenses. These findings suggest that the perceived GST 2.0 price relief not only encouraged consumption in some cases but also provided households with greater flexibility for savings and investments in crucial areas like education, health, and improved food quality.
