Annamalai Considers Quitting BJP for New Public Movement in Tamil Nadu

· · 3 min read

Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai is reportedly weighing options to leave the party and launch a non-political public movement. Sources suggest an announcement could come around his birthday on June 4.

Fresh speculation has emerged regarding the political future of K. Annamalai, the former chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. Reports indicate Annamalai is considering resigning from the party to establish a new public movement focused on civic engagement rather than a traditional political party.

Future Plans Under Discussion

According to a News18 report citing unnamed sources, Annamalai is actively exploring the concept of a people's movement. This initiative would prioritize civic participation over direct political party formation. Supporters in Madurai have reportedly displayed posters urging him to take on a new role to “save Tamil Nadu,” fueling the ongoing speculation.

Sources further suggest that Annamalai is expected to travel to New Delhi soon to discuss his next steps with the BJP's central leadership. While no official confirmation has been made, an announcement is anticipated in the coming days, possibly followed by a press conference later this week. Discussions with close aides reportedly include launching a public movement first, assessing its reception, and then deciding whether to form a political party or exit politics entirely. A formal announcement might coincide with his birthday on June 4.

Annamalai's Rise and Challenges in Tamil Nadu BJP

For nearly four years, Annamalai was the most prominent face of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. A former IPS officer, he joined the party in 2020 and was elevated to state president within a year. His appointment was part of the BJP's strategy to build an independent base in a state traditionally dominated by regional parties.

His profile significantly grew through the “En Mann, En Makkal” (My Land, My People) padayatra conducted ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At the concluding event in Tiruppur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly commended Annamalai for effectively conveying the BJP's message across Tamil Nadu households.

Despite Annamalai's efforts, which led to an increase in the BJP's vote share, the party struggled to convert this momentum into electoral victories. His aggressive critiques of AIADMK leaders also contributed to heightened tensions with the BJP's key regional ally, ultimately leading to the dissolution of the BJP-AIADMK alliance in 2023.

Shifting Political Landscape

The political dynamics in Tamil Nadu shifted ahead of the 2026 Assembly election, with the BJP prioritizing the rebuilding of ties with the AIADMK as part of a broader anti-DMK strategy. Annamalai was subsequently replaced as the Tamil Nadu BJP chief in April 2025.

His diminished role became even more apparent during the 2026 Assembly election when his name was absent from the BJP's candidate list. Although Annamalai stated that the decision not to contest was his own, intended to allow him to focus on campaigning, the move intensified speculation about his standing within the party.

Reacting to these reports, DMK leader TKS Elangovan commented,

“It is a funny thing that he is seeking permission from the BJP to form a new party; he is already a BJP worker. I can say anything can happen in the BJP. I don't think Annamalai will quit, because it is not easy to run a party. He is not an actor like Vijay. Let us wait and see what happens.”
