· · 2 min read

In a significant political upset, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal's Bhabanipur constituency by over 15,000 votes in the 2026 assembly elections. This result marks a major setback for Banerjee and a symbolic win for the BJP.

In a dramatic turn of events in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has secured a decisive victory over Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency. Adhikari triumphed by a margin of 15,105 votes, delivering a significant political upset on Banerjee's home turf.

A Decisive Victory in Bhabanipur

The final vote tally confirmed Adhikari's win, with the BJP candidate securing 73,917 votes against Mamata Banerjee's 58,812. This outcome represents a major blow to the TMC and is seen as a symbolic breakthrough for the BJP in Bengal politics, especially in a constituency closely associated with the Chief Minister.

A Rematch of Nandigram

The Bhabanipur contest had garnered national attention, framed as a prestige battle for both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. This 2026 showdown was also widely viewed as a rematch of the intense 2021 Nandigram battle, where Suvendu Adhikari famously defeated Mamata Banerjee by a narrow margin of 1,956 votes. In that previous election, Adhikari had polled 1,10,764 votes to Banerjee's 1,08,808.

With Bhabanipur now slipping from the TMC’s control, the result is poised to significantly reshape the political discourse in West Bengal and further intensify the rivalry between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee. Political analysts anticipate this outcome will have far-reaching implications for the state's political landscape.
