Japanese tech conglomerate SoftBank Group is reportedly in discussions with investment banks to raise between $10 billion and $20 billion through a bond sale, potentially commencing as early as September. The move aims to finance SoftBank's substantial investment commitment to OpenAI and to repay a significant bridge loan.
Financing OpenAI and Refinancing Debt
Earlier this year, SoftBank secured a $40 billion bridge loan to help fund its initial investment in the artificial intelligence startup OpenAI. With a reported commitment of nearly $65 billion to OpenAI by October 2026, SoftBank is now seeking additional capital through bond markets.
According to a Bloomberg report, the planned bond sale would not only inject fresh capital for its OpenAI ventures but also serve to refinance a portion of the existing $40 billion bridge loan, easing its current debt obligations.
Market Concerns and SoftBank's Position
The prospect of a new bond issuance has drawn scrutiny from investors, particularly given SoftBank's current junk-rated status. Following news of the potential sale, the company's 8.5% dollar bond experienced its largest daily drop since April, falling approximately 2.3 cents to around 98 cents on the dollar, while its credit-default swaps widened.
A SoftBank spokesperson, quoted by Bloomberg, acknowledged that the company is actively exploring various options to refinance its bridge loan. However, they emphasized that no definitive decisions have been made regarding specific amounts or structures.
Broader AI Investment Trend
SoftBank's substantial debt-backed investment in OpenAI underscores a growing trend across the technology sector. AI companies are increasingly leveraging bond markets and other forms of debt to fund the massive infrastructure required for the AI boom.
Reports indicate that companies have collectively borrowed over $410 billion this year alone through bond markets to finance data centers, advanced GPUs, power infrastructure, and other critical AI components. This highlights how the escalating demand for AI capabilities is largely being fueled by significant debt financing.
SoftBank is reportedly considering a 144A bond offering, which would allow the bonds to be sold to institutional investors in the United States, providing access to a broader pool of potential capital.
