OnePlus has confirmed a significant strategic pivot, announcing its exit from new product rollouts in the United States and European markets. This decision marks a major restructuring for the smartphone manufacturer, which will now focus its efforts elsewhere.
In a parallel development, the company also revealed that its eligible smartphones globally will transition from OxygenOS to Oppo's ColorOS. This software migration is slated to occur with the release of the upcoming Android 17 update, with devices upgrading to ColorOS 17.
Streamlining Software Development with Oppo
The move to ColorOS is part of a broader strategy to streamline software development processes with its parent company, Oppo. OnePlus stated that this integration aims to leverage Oppo's extensive research and development resources, fostering a unified software platform. This shared development is expected to accelerate software updates and enhance overall software quality through combined testing and expertise.
For current OnePlus users in the US and Europe, the company has assured continued support. Existing customers will still receive essential software updates, security patches, warranty coverage, and comprehensive after-sales support. Customer service operations in these regions are also expected to remain unchanged.
Commitment to the Indian Market
While winding down new product introductions in North America, OnePlus reiterated its unwavering commitment to the Indian market. The company confirmed that India remains a crucial region for its operations, where it will continue to introduce new products and support its existing customer base.
Indian OnePlus users will also experience the shift to ColorOS with the Android 17 update. Eligible devices will be given the option to upgrade to ColorOS 17 upon its release, aligning the Indian market with the global software strategy.
"As part of the proactive global strategy adjustment, OnePlus has decided to conclude new product rollouts in North America," OnePlus stated. "This was by no means an easy call to make, and we wanted to come forward and be completely honest with the friends who have stood by us for so long."
The company believes that the unified software approach will allow both brands to build and maintain their device software more efficiently, ultimately benefiting users with faster and more stable updates.
