Meta Notifies Thousands of Employees: 'Your Role Has Been Eliminated'

· · 2 min read

Meta has informed thousands of employees they have been laid off, with an early morning email stating, 'Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated.' The communication details severance packages, visa support, and immediate system access removal for affected staff.

Meta initiated a significant workforce reduction, notifying thousands of employees on May 20 that their roles had been eliminated. Affected staff received an early morning email with the stark subject, 'Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated as part of today's reorganisation.'

Details of the Layoff Communication

The internal email, which has been widely reported, outlined a 'non-working notice period' starting immediately. During this period, employees' internal access to Meta systems and their company badges were deactivated. Despite the immediate removal of access, individuals will continue to receive their salary and benefits through their termination date and do not need to perform any further work for the company.

The communication also provided crucial information regarding severance pay, visa assistance for sponsored employees, and access to an 'Alumni Portal' for additional resources and support. A signable Separation Agreement detailing individual packages was promised via personal email later the same day.

Severance and Support for Affected Staff

Eligible regular employees (FTEs) are being offered a severance package that includes 16 weeks of pay, plus an additional two weeks for every year of completed service, minus the notice period. Meta also committed to covering COBRA health insurance premiums for affected employees and their dependents for 18 months. To aid in the transition, three complimentary months of external job search assistance through Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH) are also being provided.

For employees whose work authorization or visa was sponsored by Meta, the company acknowledged the particular difficulty of their situation. The Alumni Portal offers general immigration guidance and contact information for assigned law firms to help address immediate questions.

Context of Meta's Workforce Reduction

These layoffs are part of Meta's previously announced plan to reduce its global workforce by 10%, impacting approximately 8,000 employees. The company stated that this reduction is a 'continued effort to run the company more efficiently' and to offset significant investments being made in areas like artificial intelligence. Alongside the layoffs, more than 7,000 workers were reportedly shifted into roles more closely tied to Meta’s expanding AI initiatives.
