Thieves Steal Nvidia-Branded Trailers in California, Find 20 Tons of Sand Instead of AI Hardware

· · 2 min read

Thieves targeting valuable AI hardware stole two Nvidia-branded trailers from an autonomous trucking company in Fremont, California. They were surprised to find 40,000 pounds of sand, used for testing, instead of high-tech components.

In an unusual cargo theft incident in Fremont, California, thieves reportedly targeting valuable artificial intelligence (AI) hardware made off with two trailers prominently branded with Nvidia and PlusAI logos. Their haul, however, turned out to be far less valuable than anticipated: approximately 40,000 pounds of sand.

The incident occurred late Wednesday night at a facility belonging to PlusAI, an autonomous trucking developer. The company utilizes Nvidia technology in its systems and uses the sand to simulate the weight and conditions of real freight during vehicle testing. Each stolen trailer contained roughly 20,000 pounds of sand, not the highly sought-after Nvidia chips or other AI infrastructure.

The Heist and Discovery

Workers at the PlusAI warehouse discovered the trailers missing on Thursday morning and promptly notified the Fremont Police Department. Investigations revealed that locks securing the trailers had been forced. Security footage reportedly showed two unidentified tractor cabs, not belonging to PlusAI, moving the trailers from the docks.

According to Lauren Kwan, Vice President of Marketing for PlusAI, the prominent branding on the trailers likely made them appear to contain valuable equipment. “The very apparent branding probably made them think there was very valuable equipment back there,” Kwan stated, as reported by The San Francisco Standard.

An Unexpected Recovery

The stolen trailers were recovered just hours after the theft was reported, thanks to a peculiar coincidence. PlusAI’s vice president of legal received a message from a friend who had spotted two company-branded trailers outside an office in nearby Newark. Unaware of the theft, the friend sent a congratulatory photograph.

PlusAI employees quickly confirmed the trailers' identity and location, contacting Newark police. Authorities subsequently recovered both trailers and returned them to the company. Police informed PlusAI that the thieves appeared to have opened the trailers, discovered their sandy contents, and abandoned them without taking anything.

Context of Rising AI Hardware Theft

This incident occurs amidst a rising trend of cargo theft targeting expensive AI hardware and data-center equipment across the United States. Nvidia’s chips are particularly coveted components in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market, making any Nvidia-branded equipment a potential target for criminals.

While PlusAI does integrate Nvidia technology into its autonomous driving systems, the stolen trailers were not transporting any actual Nvidia chips or other AI hardware. The Fremont Police Department confirmed that the case remains under investigation, with no arrests reported at the time of the initial reports.
