Mumbai's Iconic Yazdani Bakery Shuts for Renovations Amid 'Mundhe Effect' Speculation

· · 2 min read

Mumbai's historic Yazdani Bakery, beloved for its traditional Irani baked goods, has temporarily closed for renovations since September 29. The closure sparked social media speculation linking it to the Maharashtra FDA's recent crackdown, though the bakery cites only renovations.

Mumbai's iconic Yazdani Bakery, a cherished landmark in the city's culinary landscape, has announced a temporary closure for renovations, effective September 29. The news has stirred a wave of nostalgia among its long-time patrons and sparked considerable discussion online, connecting it to a broader food safety crackdown in Maharashtra.

Renovations Cited for Yazdani Bakery Closure

Located on Cawasji Patel Street in Mumbai's Fort area, Yazdani Bakery has been a staple for generations since its establishment in 1953. Known for its traditional breads, brun maska, mawa cake, and biscuits, the bakery is a significant part of Mumbai's old Irani bakery culture. In its official announcement, the management stated that the establishment, “built for the people,” would now undergo renovations to “give something back to the community.” The exact reopening date remains unspecified.

The 'Mundhe Effect' and Online Speculation

The temporary closure of Yazdani Bakery, a prominent institution, comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for food establishments across Mumbai. Under the leadership of Tukaram Mundhe, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified inspections, leading to notices and license suspensions for several restaurants and cafes over alleged hygiene and food-safety violations.

This context has led some social media users to speculate about a so-called 'Mundhe Effect' influencing Yazdani's closure. This speculation gained traction following the suspension of the FSSAI license for another historic Mumbai establishment, Kyani & Co, reportedly due to serious hygiene issues found during an FDA inspection. Other establishments, including Nair Hospital canteen and Olympia Coffee House, have also faced similar actions.

No Evidence of FDA Action Against Yazdani

Despite the online conjecture, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Yazdani Bakery was shut down by the FDA. The bakery itself has consistently attributed its temporary closure solely to renovation work. Operating primarily on a takeaway basis since the pandemic suspended its dining service, Yazdani remains a beloved piece of Mumbai's food heritage, with customers eagerly awaiting its return.
