India's Project 75I: Rs 80,000 Crore Submarine Deal Nears Final Approval

· · 2 min read

India's ambitious Project 75I, valued at Rs 80,000 crore, is on the verge of final approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security. This initiative aims to acquire six advanced conventional submarines featuring Air Independent Propulsion technology, significantly bolstering the Indian Navy's underwater capabilities.

India's ambitious Project 75I, a cornerstone of the nation's naval modernization strategy, is reportedly on the cusp of receiving final approval from the powerful Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Valued at an estimated Rs 80,000 crore (approximately $9.6 billion USD), this landmark initiative aims to acquire six advanced conventional submarines equipped with cutting-edge Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.

Boosting Underwater Capabilities

The primary objective of Project 75I is to significantly enhance the Indian Navy's underwater combat capabilities and replace its aging fleet. The new submarines, designed for extended submerged endurance thanks to AIP, will play a crucial role in safeguarding India's maritime interests and maintaining strategic deterrence in the Indian Ocean region.

Strategic Partnership Model and Global Collaboration

Under India's 'Strategic Partnership' model, the project mandates collaboration between an Indian shipyard and a leading global Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Two Indian defense giants, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDLS) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), have been identified as potential partners. Several international OEMs have expressed interest or participated in earlier stages, including:

  • ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (Germany)
  • Navantia (Spain)
  • Naval Group (France)
  • Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (South Korea)
  • Rubin Design Bureau (Russia)

The selection process for the foreign partner will be critical, focusing on technology transfer, indigenous manufacturing capabilities, and the integration of advanced systems.

"Make in India" Flagship Defense Project

Project 75I is heralded as the largest 'Make in India' defense procurement endeavor to date. It underscores the government's commitment to boosting indigenous defense manufacturing, reducing reliance on foreign imports, and fostering a self-reliant defense industrial base. The extensive local production component is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and drive technological advancements within India's defense sector.

Geopolitical Significance

The approval and subsequent execution of Project 75I come at a time of heightened geopolitical competition, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. With China rapidly expanding its naval footprint, India's enhanced submarine capabilities are vital for maintaining a balance of power and protecting crucial sea lanes of communication. This project represents a significant step towards ensuring India's long-term maritime security and strategic autonomy.
