Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth is spearheading a major AI transformation, shifting 7,000 employees and laying off 8,000. The company is also tracking employee keystrokes and mouse clicks to train AI agents, raising privacy concerns.

Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, is leading a sweeping AI-driven overhaul of the company's workforce, according to a report published on May 25, 2026. This initiative involves significant restructuring, including employee reassignments and layoffs, alongside new policies for data collection.

As part of this transformation, Meta has reportedly shifted approximately 7,000 employees to support its expanding artificial intelligence initiatives, while simultaneously laying off over 8,000 staff members. The changes aim to broadly integrate AI across all workflows and expand the company's investment in AI infrastructure.

A notable aspect of the revamp includes Meta informing employees that it will monitor keystrokes and mouse clicks on work devices. This data collection is intended to train the company's AI agents. When faced with privacy concerns regarding this tracking, Bosworth reportedly advised employees to avoid using personal email on company devices.

Bosworth's Leadership and Vision

Andrew Bosworth, a veteran who has worked with CEO Mark Zuckerberg for over two decades, is now at the forefront of Meta’s AI endeavors. Known for his outspoken and aggressive approach to technical direction, Bosworth is pushing for rapid change within the organization.

In an internal memo, Bosworth articulated his vision, stating, “Our role is to direct, review and help them improve,” as Meta scales its efforts to build AI agents. He highlighted efficiency gains, noting, “We’re already seeing some tasks that used to take hours now take minutes, and soon we won’t need to be in the loop on some tasks at all.” Bosworth reportedly favors lean teams, potentially with few or no managers, and prefers building and testing working prototypes over traditional planning documents and written proposals.

Employee Concerns and Future Outlook

The extensive automation plans, which aim to reduce human involvement in various processes, have sparked apprehension among employees regarding the long-term impact on job security. Staff are increasingly concerned about how this AI-driven transformation will be fully implemented and its implications for their roles.

Bosworth has been central to several pivotal Meta projects, from its advertising business and the Metaverse to battlefield technology. His current leadership in transitioning Meta to an “AI-first” model signifies a major strategic shift, blurring the lines between human and AI-driven work as management layers are streamlined and traditional workflows are re-evaluated.
