SpaceX's Starlink is on the cusp of launching its high-speed satellite internet service in India, with key infrastructure already in place. Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations at SpaceX, announced at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 that the company has successfully established 20 gateway sites across the country, equipped with hundreds of antennas.
These gateway sites are crucial ground stations that link Starlink's orbiting satellite constellation to India's terrestrial internet backbone. Dreyer emphasized that Starlink has invested heavily in this ground infrastructure, ensuring its operations are aligned with India's stringent regulatory and security requirements.
Years of Collaboration with Indian Authorities
Starlink's journey towards an India launch has involved extensive collaboration over approximately five years. Dreyer confirmed ongoing discussions with Indian authorities, industry stakeholders, and telecom companies to tailor Starlink's services to best serve the Indian market. "We have built our Starlink operations specifically for India in recognition of Indian security requirements and other regulations," she stated.
The company has also forged strategic partnerships, signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with leading Indian telecom providers, Airtel and Jio, to facilitate its operational readiness. Furthermore, Starlink has engaged with state governments, signing Letters of Intent (LOIs) with Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Meghalaya, indicating a strong interest in addressing local connectivity needs.
Awaiting Final Regulatory Green Light
Despite the significant progress in infrastructure deployment and strategic partnerships, Starlink is still awaiting final regulatory approvals to commence its services. Dreyer highlighted Starlink's potential to dramatically accelerate internet connectivity across India, particularly in remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband or mobile networks face deployment challenges.
Starlink's vision aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious goal of achieving universal connectivity throughout India. The company believes its satellite network can play a pivotal role in reaching the remaining unconnected populations, contributing to 100% connectivity nationwide once the necessary clearances are secured.
