The Indian government has greenlit a substantial infrastructure project, allocating ₹993.64 crore for the upgrade of a vital section of National Highway 10 (NH-10) in Sikkim. The initiative, announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, focuses on the stretch between Rangpo and Ranipool, promising a significantly safer and more resilient travel experience for those journeying to Gangtok and other parts of the state.
Enhanced Connectivity for Challenging Himalayan Terrain
The upgrade will transform the existing road into a two-lane highway featuring paved shoulders. Crucially, the project incorporates advanced engineering solutions tailored for the challenging Himalayan landscape. This includes the construction of multiple tunnels, viaducts, and bridges, alongside comprehensive slope-protection measures.
These additions are specifically designed to address vulnerable sliding and sinking zones that have historically posed risks on the route. By integrating these robust features, the project aims to mitigate the dangers of landslides and improve overall road stability.
Boosting Sikkim's Socio-Economic Development
Beyond immediate safety improvements, the upgraded NH-10 corridor is expected to deliver widespread socio-economic benefits for Sikkim. It will facilitate faster and more reliable movement for tourists, which is vital for the state's economy. Furthermore, the enhanced connectivity will significantly improve the transportation of agricultural and horticultural produce, benefiting local farmers and markets.
The project also holds strategic importance, strengthening the movement of defence personnel and supplies in the region. This multi-faceted development is anticipated to contribute substantially to Sikkim's overall progress and prosperity.
