Starlink Ready for India Launch, Awaits Authorization to Boost Connectivity

· · 2 min read

SpaceX's Starlink is poised to launch satellite broadband services in India, awaiting final authorization. The company has invested in 20 ground gateway sites and partnered with local operators to meet regulatory and security requirements.

SpaceX's Starlink is prepared to roll out its satellite broadband services across India, pending final regulatory authorization. Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Global Government Affairs at SpaceX, confirmed the company's readiness during the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi.

Dreyer highlighted that Starlink has spent the last five years actively engaging with Indian regulators, telecommunication operators, and state governments. This extensive groundwork includes establishing robust infrastructure and ensuring compliance with the nation's stringent security and regulatory mandates. "We built our Starlink operations specifically for India in recognition of Indian security requirements and other regulations, establishing controls at every layer for India and keeping Indian user data within India," Dreyer stated.

Significant Investment in Indian Ground Infrastructure

The company has made substantial investments in India's ground infrastructure, setting up 20 gateway sites equipped with hundreds of antennas. These facilities are crucial for the operation of its satellite internet service. Starlink has also forged partnerships with major Indian telecom players like Airtel and Jio, further integrating its strategy with the local market.

Bridging India's Digital Divide

While acknowledging India's "extraordinary" digital progress, Dreyer emphasized that significant connectivity challenges persist, particularly in the "last mile." Starlink aims to accelerate India's journey towards 100% connectivity, aligning with Prime Minister Modi's vision. "We're standing ready to serve India. Once India is ready, we're ready to work with the government, ready to work with operators, ready to help Prime Minister Modi achieve his vision of 100% connectivity throughout India," she added.

The satellite broadband service is envisioned to support critical applications such as digital classrooms, telemedicine services, and robust disaster-response communications. Furthermore, Starlink could provide essential backhaul for 4G and 5G towers in remote or difficult-to-reach areas where traditional fiber optic infrastructure is impractical.
