Meta Boosts Teen Safety with AI Age Checks, Parental Alerts on Platforms

· · 2 min read

Meta has introduced new global safety measures for teen users across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. These updates include AI-powered age verification, default 13+ content settings, and alerts for parents regarding self-harm searches.

Meta has rolled out a comprehensive set of new safety updates aimed at protecting teen users across its core platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. These changes come amidst increasing global scrutiny regarding the impact of social media content on young people and respond to calls from regulators, parents, and child safety organizations for more robust protections.

Enhanced Age-Appropriate Experiences by Default

A central component of the update is the global implementation of "13+ content settings" for teen accounts. This initiative ensures that younger users are placed into age-appropriate experiences by default, significantly limiting their exposure to potentially harmful or inappropriate content.

  • Facebook: Content deemed unsuitable for teens will be hidden from areas like Feed and Reels. It will also restrict teens' ability to interact with profiles, pages, groups, and events primarily featuring such content.
  • Messenger: The 13+ setting will limit teens from viewing links to inappropriate Facebook content or chatting with accounts that predominantly share it.

"Keeping teens safe is one of our most important priorities, and these updates — from 13+ content settings across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, to AI-powered age detection and new parental alerts — reflect our commitment to building age-appropriate experiences by default," stated Natasha Jog, Director, Public Policy, Meta, India.

AI-Powered Age Verification and Parental Supervision

Meta is significantly expanding its use of artificial intelligence to accurately identify underage accounts, moving beyond self-declared ages. These AI systems analyze various signals, including posts, comments, bios, captions, and even contextual clues like birthday celebrations or school grade references. The company is also incorporating visual analysis, which examines general visual cues such as height or bone structure to estimate age, without employing facial recognition technology to identify individuals.

A critical new feature involves alerts for parents. Instagram will now notify supervising parents if their teen repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short timeframe. This feature has initially launched for supervising parents in the European Union, Brazil, and India, with notifications being sent to inform parents and teens about its introduction.

To streamline parental oversight, Meta is consolidating controls through its Family Centre. This platform will enable parents of teens enrolled in supervision to manage activity across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger from a single, unified location.
