The Indian government, in partnership with major technology firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has begun testing Anthropic's advanced cybersecurity-focused AI model, Claude Mythos. This significant collaboration aims to rigorously assess and identify potential security threats and vulnerabilities within India's critical digital infrastructure.
Following initial testing by global partner organizations under 'Project Glasswing,' which uncovered over 23,000 vulnerabilities and more than 10,000 critical flaws, India's initiative underscores a proactive approach to national cybersecurity. The tests will specifically target crucial systems, including the foundational Aadhaar national ID infrastructure and various government login platforms, overseen by the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In).
AI to Bolster Banking and National ID Security
Infosys, a global IT consulting giant, is slated to test Mythos's capabilities in generating security fixes for its widely adopted banking platform, Finacle. This focus highlights the critical role AI is expected to play in safeguarding financial services, a sector that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman previously warned about potential AI-related threats.
While some companies may initially access Claude Opus 4.7 to assist in identifying and patching software vulnerabilities, India is actively negotiating with US officials for direct and secure access to the full Mythos model. US Ambassador Sergio Gor indicated that such requests from a trusted partner like India are under consideration, with ongoing talks to establish a secure testing framework.
Global Concerns and India's Digital Expansion
Anthropic's Claude Mythos has garnered global attention due to its powerful capabilities and potential for misuse, prompting governments worldwide to advise financial institutions to strengthen their cybersecurity frameworks. India, with its rapidly expanding digital infrastructure, including the Aadhaar system which digitally registers 1.4 billion citizens, plays a vital role in global banking and technology operations.
The current testing phase is crucial for India to gain a comprehensive understanding of Mythos's potential cybersecurity risks and defensive capabilities. This knowledge will be instrumental in further strengthening the nation's overall cybersecurity preparedness against evolving digital threats.
