Designed for critical missions in heavily defended airspace, this advanced combat drone boasts impressive speeds and autonomous capabilities, positioning India at the forefront of indigenous drone technology for combat applications.
Unmatched Speed and Operational Range
The Nightshade ADX-1 is engineered for speed, with reported cruising and attack velocities reaching an astonishing 600-700 km/h. This makes it one of the fastest tactical UAVs currently under development by Indian startups, significantly outperforming existing platforms like Iran's Shahed-238, which operates around 520 km/h.
With a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 70 kg, the Nightshade ADX-1 can carry modular payloads, including up to 5 kg of explosives for precision strike missions. Its operational range allows it to penetrate over 100 km into hostile territory, with future variants projected to extend beyond 150 km depending on mission requirements.
Resilience in Contested Airspace
A defining feature of the Nightshade ADX-1 is its ability to operate effectively in environments where satellite navigation systems are compromised or unavailable. It integrates an Inertial Navigation System (INS) with advanced terrain-following capabilities, ensuring accurate flight paths even under intense electronic warfare conditions, including GPS jamming and spoofing.
This low-altitude, terrain-hugging flight profile also significantly reduces its radar signature, enhancing its chances of successfully penetrating sophisticated air-defense networks undetected.
Strategic Missions: SEAD and Maritime Engagement
The primary intended role for the Nightshade ADX-1 is Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). It is designed to locate and neutralize hostile radar systems, clearing safe corridors for manned fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, and other strike assets before larger air operations commence. The UAV can carry anti-radiation homing sensors that detect radar emissions and autonomously guide the drone toward them.
Beyond land targets, the drone incorporates Automatic Identification System (AIS) capabilities, enabling it to identify, track, and engage maritime surface vessels, adding a crucial dimension to naval operations.
Apollyon Dynamics: Pushing Defense Innovation
Apollyon Dynamics, founded by BTech students Jayant Khatri and Sourya Choudhury, operates as a deep-tech defense startup incubated at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus. The company achieved a significant milestone in early 2026 with the successful test-launch of its jet-powered UAV from a moving vehicle, showcasing its mobile launch flexibility critical for battlefield deployment.
To accelerate its development and production efforts, the startup has secured ₹4 crore in pre-seed funding. It has also pioneered what is described as the Indian Army's first mobile drone laboratory, designed to facilitate frontline customization and rapid deployment of first-person-view (FPV) drones, underscoring its commitment to agile defense solutions.
