IITs Transform Engineering Education with New AI, Data Science Programs

· · 3 min read

India's premier IITs are rapidly integrating artificial intelligence and data science into their engineering curricula, moving beyond computer science specialization. Over 50 degree-level programs now feature these emerging technologies, reflecting a significant academic shift.

India's prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are at the forefront of a major educational transformation, embedding artificial intelligence (AI) and data science deeply into their engineering programs. This strategic shift acknowledges AI not merely as a specialized computer science field, but as a foundational technology capable of revolutionizing diverse engineering and research disciplines.

Expanding AI and Data Science Offerings

A comprehensive review of the 23 IITs reveals approximately 50 degree-level programs that now prominently feature Artificial Intelligence, Machine Intelligence, or closely related AI and Data Science themes. This expansion signifies a proactive approach to equip future engineers with essential skills for an AI-driven world.

Key Institutional Initiatives:

  • IIT Delhi: Its School of Artificial Intelligence offers focused programs in Machine Intelligence and Data Science. Research areas span deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, natural language processing, responsible AI, healthcare applications, manufacturing, and intelligent robotics.
  • IIT Madras: The institute has significantly broadened its AI curriculum. Its B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence combines fundamental concepts with practical applications, including internships and undergraduate research. In 2025, IIT Madras also launched a web-enabled postgraduate diploma with an AI specialization, allowing graduates and working professionals to study remotely and potentially pursue a Web-Enabled M.Tech.
  • IIT Bombay: This institute has introduced programs covering climate and sustainability, semiconductor materials, computational materials engineering, MEMS, and AI and Data Science. Additionally, IIT Bombay offers an 18-month executive postgraduate diploma in AI and Data Science, alongside a four-month online 'Leadership with AI' course tailored for professionals.

Democratizing AI Education

The reach of AI learning extends beyond traditional IIT campuses. IIT Madras has leveraged its SWAYAM Plus platform to make AI education accessible to a broader audience. In 2025, it introduced beginner-friendly courses like AI in Physics, AI in Chemistry, AI in Accounting, Cricket Analytics with AI, and AI/ML using Python.

This initiative further expanded to include courses such as AI for Educators, AI for Aspiring Engineers, AI for Administrators, and Prompt Engineering. SWAYAM Plus now boasts over 500 online courses across 15 sectors, underscoring a commitment to widespread AI literacy.

Integrating Traditional Engineering with Emerging Technologies

The growing demand for computer science and AI-related programs is evident, with reports indicating that a vast majority of top JEE (Advanced) qualifiers are opting for computer science. IIT directors emphasize viewing AI as an enabler rather than a replacement for conventional engineering disciplines.

IITs are increasingly blending traditional engineering with advanced computational and AI technologies. IIT Madras's 2026-27 programs, for instance, include robotics, semiconductor materials technology, sustainable engineering, sports analytics and AI, quantitative finance, and computational engineering. This integrated approach ensures that Indian engineers are well-prepared for the complex, interdisciplinary challenges of the future.
