Background of the Siri Lawsuit
The lawsuit, filed by Peter Landsheft in a US federal court in California, stemmed from Apple's WWDC 2024 presentation, which showcased advanced AI-powered Siri features, including personal context, on-screen awareness, and cross-app actions. Consumers reportedly developed clear expectations based on this advertising.
However, when the iPhone 16 series launched in September 2024, the promised Apple Intelligence capabilities were either significantly limited or entirely unavailable. Apple subsequently delayed the full Siri AI upgrades in March 2025. The plaintiffs argued that Apple's marketing had misled consumers into purchasing the product.
While Apple denied all allegations of wrongdoing, the company agreed to the $250 million settlement to resolve the case, stating it would allow them to focus on product development and service delivery.
