Sarvam AI Grants Lifetime Access to Cancer Survivor After Speech Tool Cost Concern

· · 2 min read

A 70-year-old oral cancer survivor, Raghunath AS, highlighted the high cost of AI speech tools for daily use. In response, Sarvam AI co-founder Pratyush Kumar granted him lifetime access and announced plans for a formal accessibility program.

A recent interaction on social media has underscored the critical need for affordable artificial intelligence (AI) speech technology, particularly for individuals with disabilities. Raghunath AS, a 70-year-old oral cancer survivor who lost his ability to speak, brought attention to the financial burden of relying on AI-powered communication tools.

The Challenge of Communication for Raghunath AS

Since battling oral cancer in 2015, Raghunath has depended on written notes for communication, often finding them unread or unanswered. His wife has become his primary voice for crucial interactions, such as doctor visits or banking. He recognized the potential of text-to-speech technology to regain independence, allowing him to type and have his words spoken aloud.

However, Raghunath pointed out that the usage-based, per-character pricing model of services like Sarvam AI's models made regular, extensive use prohibitively expensive. He appealed to Sarvam AI for an affordable monthly subscription with unlimited usage for people with disabilities, emphasizing that access to such vital technology should not be limited by cost.

Sarvam AI's Response and Future Plans

Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of the Indian AI startup Sarvam AI, quickly responded to Raghunath's appeal. In a public statement, Kumar thanked Raghunath for raising the issue, acknowledging that users should not have to monitor character counts to benefit from AI. He confirmed that Sarvam AI had provided Raghunath with lifetime access to its AI models.

Kumar also extended an invitation to other users relying on Sarvam's services for accessibility purposes to contact the company directly at empower@sarvam.ai. He stated that a dedicated team would assist them while Sarvam AI works towards launching a formal accessibility program in the near future. The company's 'Bulbul' models offer text-to-speech capabilities in multiple Indian languages, converting written content into natural-sounding audio.

Addressing AI Speech Tools Accessibility

This incident highlights a broader conversation about making advanced AI technologies like text-to-speech accessible and affordable for those who need them most. As AI capabilities expand, ensuring equitable access, especially for essential communication, becomes a vital consideration for technology developers and policymakers alike.
