New data from Amazon India's Great Summer Sale 2026 reveals a significant shift in consumer buying behavior, particularly among first-time purchasers of electronics. Instead of starting with budget-friendly devices, a growing number of Indian consumers are directly investing in premium gadgets across various categories, including laptops, tablets, smartphones, and AI-powered home appliances.
First-Time Buyers Choose High-End Devices
Historically, Indian consumers often adopted a value-first approach to electronics, beginning with entry-level products and upgrading over time. However, figures from Amazon's 2026 sale indicate a departure from this pattern. Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India, noted that consumers are "not just buying more, they are buying better."
This trend was particularly evident in the tablet and laptop segments. Amazon reported a remarkable 15-fold growth in premium tablet sales and a 9-fold increase in premium laptop sales year-on-year during the Great Summer Sale. Khan emphasized, "First-time buyers are no longer starting at the entry level. They are coming in directly at the premium end and that conviction is showing in the numbers."
A similar pattern emerged in the smartphone market, where the premium segment saw its value double year-on-year. This growth was largely fueled by new launches in the ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 price bracket, appealing to buyers seeking advanced features without the ultra-high cost of flagship models.
AI-Powered Appliances Gain Traction
The inclination towards premium options extends beyond personal gadgets into the realm of home appliances. Amazon's data shows strong adoption of AI-powered appliances in Indian households. The premium appliance category now accounts for one in every three appliance sales on the platform, with over 75% of these purchases being AI-enabled products like smart air conditioners and refrigerators.
Khan highlighted that the success of the consumer electronics AI Store, launched earlier in 2026, validates this insight. Home entertainment also reflects this premiumization, with demand for 55-inch and larger televisions doubling during the sale, as consumers upgrade to bigger screens and advanced display technologies.
Premiumization Spreads Beyond Metros
This evolving consumer mindset is not confined to major metropolitan areas. Cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Visakhapatnam, and Secunderabad are increasingly mirroring metro consumption patterns, with residents opting for higher-specification and AI-powered devices. Khan observed that these non-metro cities are "choosing the same higher-spec, AI-powered products as the metros."
Amazon attributes this shift, in part, to enhanced affordability tools like exchange offers, no-cost EMI options, and faster delivery timelines, which make premium products more accessible. Beyond financial incentives, the company believes this change signifies a broader consumer willingness to invest more upfront for superior technology experiences and long-term value.
