Large-Cap Stocks Poised to Lead India's Market Recovery: Analyst

· · 2 min read

Anand Rathi Wealth's Feroze Azeez predicts large-cap stocks will drive India's next market recovery phase. This shift is fueled by a reversal in India's MSCI emerging market weight trend and anticipated foreign investor inflows.

Indian equities, after a period of instability and foreign outflows, are showing signs of stabilization. A significant shift in market leadership is now anticipated, with large-cap stocks expected to spearhead the next phase of recovery, according to Feroze Azeez, Joint CEO at Anand Rathi Wealth.

MSCI Weight Reversal Fuels Optimism

Azeez highlights a crucial turnaround in India's weight within the MSCI emerging market index as a primary catalyst. For seven consecutive reviews, from November 2024 to May 2026, India's index weight had consistently declined. However, the latest August 2026 review marked a reversal, with India's weight inching up from 11.8% to 11.9%.

This positive adjustment is seen as a strong indicator that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) are poised to return to Indian markets. Azeez noted that this positive trend was already evident in FII flows during July and August, suggesting the August review's impact is already being felt.

Why Large-Caps Stand to Benefit

When foreign capital re-enters the market, large-cap stocks are typically the first port of call. These companies dominate benchmark indices and are better equipped to absorb substantial institutional flows compared to their mid and small-cap counterparts. Azeez emphasized that the case for large-caps now looks more compelling than a sector-specific bet for the remainder of the financial year 2026-27.

While broader markets have played a significant role in recent rallies, the anticipated return of FIIs is expected to tilt the balance towards larger, more liquid names. This rotation in leadership signifies a new phase for India's recovery story, offering a clearer signal for a market seeking durable direction after a volatile period.

Impact of Foreign Investor Inflows

The positive shift in India's MSCI weight is expected to draw renewed interest from passive and active foreign funds. This influx of global allocations would disproportionately benefit India's large-cap universe, making them key drivers of future market performance. The November 2026 MSCI review could further favor India, potentially at the expense of other emerging markets like Korea and Taiwan, reinforcing the large-cap stock recovery trend.
