FIFA World Cup 2026: Winners Take Record $50M Prize Money

· · 2 min read

The FIFA World Cup 2026 features a record $655 million prize pool, a 50% increase from 2022. Champions will secure $50 million, with runners-up taking home $33 million.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final, set to feature defending champions Argentina against Spain at the New York-New Jersey Stadium, is not only a battle for glory but also for unprecedented financial rewards. FIFA has announced a record $655 million prize fund for the tournament, marking a significant 50 percent increase from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Record Prize Fund Details

The champions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will receive a staggering $50 million, while the team finishing as runners-up will take home $33 million. This substantial increase underscores the growing commercial success and global appeal of football's premier international competition.

Beyond the top two, other teams will also receive significant payouts from the expanded prize pool:

  • Third-place team (England): $29 million
  • Fourth-place team (France): $27 million
  • Quarter-finalists (Morocco, Belgium, Norway, Switzerland): $19 million each
  • Teams eliminated in the Round of 16: $15 million each
  • Teams eliminated in the Round of 32: $11 million each

Every one of the 48 participating nations is guaranteed at least $10.5 million. This includes $9 million for teams knocked out in the group stage, along with an additional $1.5 million allocated for preparation costs.

Who Receives the Prize Money?

It is important to note that FIFA awards the prize money directly to each country's football association or federation, not to individual players. These associations then determine how the funds are distributed among players, coaching staff, and how the remainder will be invested in football development programs within their respective nations.

For instance, co-host United States, which reached the Round of 16, will receive $15 million. Under a 2022 agreement, 80 percent of this amount will be equally split between the men's and women's national-team player pools, contingent on the women's team qualifying for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. In contrast, England's players are known to donate their £2,000 match fees from the Football Association to charity.

The 2026 Final Matchup

The final on July 19 will see Argentina, aiming for their fourth World Cup title after victories in 1978, 1986, and 2022, face Spain, who seek their second crown. Spain secured their spot by defeating France 2-0 in the semi-finals, while Argentina advanced by beating England 2-1.

The record prize money adds another layer of intensity to what is already one of the most anticipated sporting events globally, highlighting the immense stakes for both the competing nations and their respective footballing bodies.
