Kargil, Ladakh – Residents of Kargil will no longer endure arduous journeys to Srinagar or Leh for passport-related services, thanks to the inauguration of a new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in the district. The facility, which opened on Wednesday, marks a significant step towards bringing essential government services closer to the people in this remote region.
Inauguration and Purpose of the New Kendra
The POPSK was officially inaugurated by Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, alongside Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Member of Parliament Mohmad Haneefa Jan. This initiative, established under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Posts and Passport Seva, aims to provide convenient access to passport services for the local populace.
The establishment of the Kargil Passport Seva Kendra is particularly beneficial for students, professionals, and individuals undertaking pilgrimages like Haj, who frequently travel abroad for education, employment, or religious purposes. It addresses a long-standing demand from the community, minimizing travel time and costs associated with visiting distant passport offices.
Expanding Access in Ladakh
This new facility is the second Post Office Passport Seva Kendra in the Union Territory of Ladakh, complementing the existing POPSK in Leh. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena welcomed the inauguration, emphasizing its role in enhancing accessibility to critical services for the people of Ladakh. The move aligns with broader efforts to utilize India's extensive postal network to deliver citizen-centric services in underserved and geographically challenging areas.
The initiative was led by Arvind Kher, Superintendent of Post Offices, Ladakh Postal Division, and represents another milestone in expanding public service infrastructure within the region. The Kargil Passport Seva Kendra is expected to significantly improve the ease of obtaining and renewing passports for thousands of residents.
