Tukaram Mundhe Recalls 'Your Blood Will Spill' Threat from 2007 Sand Mafia Crackdown

· · 2 min read

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe recounted receiving his first career threat in 2007, a red-ink letter from alleged Naxalites. The warning, "your blood will spill," came during his action against the sand mafia in Nanded.

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, known for his direct approach to public service, recently shared details of the first significant threat he received early in his career. The incident, which occurred in 2007, involved a chilling warning against his efforts to curb illegal sand mining.

Early Challenges in Public Service

Mundhe, who has faced 25 transfers over his 21-year tenure as a civil servant, reflected on the personal and professional challenges inherent in his role. The 2007 threat emerged during his probation period, when he served as a chief officer of a municipality and Block Development Officer (BDO) in Solapur, followed by a posting as an assistant collector in Deglur, Nanded.

It was during his time in Nanded, near the border with Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana) and the Godavari River, that Mundhe took decisive action against the powerful sand mafia. This crackdown led to direct confrontation.

'Your Blood Will Spill' Warning

Approximately one to two months into his Nanded posting, Mundhe received a letter written entirely in red ink. The letter, purportedly from Naxalites, explicitly warned him to cease his activities, stating, "Otherwise your blood will spill on this, so back out of this." Mundhe acknowledged the uncertainty regarding the letter's true origin but confirmed its existence and the stark nature of the threat.

Continued Resistance and Resilience

The 2007 incident was not an isolated one. Years later, in 2016, while serving as the Solapur collector, Mundhe faced another serious encounter. During a field visit, he spotted a truck illegally carrying sand. His attempt to intercept the vehicle led to a dangerous situation where the truck allegedly tried to ram his official car. Despite the immediate danger, Mundhe's driver skillfully maneuvered to avoid a collision, allowing them to eventually stop the truck and take action.

These experiences highlight Mundhe's unwavering commitment to public duty, even in the face of significant personal risk and repeated attempts to intimidate him throughout his distinguished career.
