Apple Realigns Workforce Amid Tech Shifts
Apple has announced significant job cuts impacting more than 200 employees across several key departments, including its Siri, Vision Pro, and artificial intelligence initiatives. The tech company confirmed it is realigning some teams to "evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users." While new roles are expected to be created, a limited number of existing positions have been eliminated.
These personnel changes signal a strategic pivot for Apple as it intensifies its focus on advanced AI capabilities and adapts to market feedback on its nascent Vision Pro headset.
Vision Pro Teams See Significant Reductions
Among the hardest hit are teams associated with the Vision Pro headset. Apple is largely shutting down a dedicated Vision Pro gaming team and substantially reducing staff in the unit responsible for producing immersive video content for the device. Approximately 100 positions within the Vision Pro organization are affected.
The decision stems from the high production costs associated with immersive 3D videos, which can run into millions of dollars per episode, coupled with a limited active user base for the Vision Pro. Despite its launch in February 2024, the headset's $3,699 price point and cumbersome design have hindered widespread adoption, and gaming traction has remained low.
However, Apple is not abandoning its immersive video efforts entirely. The company plans to produce fewer in-house videos while encouraging third-party developers to create content. Apple has also reassured employees that Vision Pro and its visionOS operating system remain part of its long-term strategy, with a potential new model considered for release by late 2028 and an immediate focus on launching smart glasses without immersive video or advanced gaming features.
Siri and AI Development Undergo Restructuring
The Siri development teams are also undergoing a significant reshuffle, with around 100 roles impacted across Siri and other software groups. This restructuring is linked to an upcoming, AI-infused version of the assistant, which is being built on a new technical architecture requiring different expertise. Apple is eliminating some existing roles to reallocate resources and create new positions to support the updated Siri.
Furthermore, employees within the Intelligent Systems Experience team, which works on various AI features across Apple devices, are also affected. These changes are part of a broader effort to reorganize and accelerate the development of AI-powered capabilities as more groups integrate AI functions into Apple's apps, features, and services.
