Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly's ambitious Rs 2,500 crore steel plant in West Bengal is approaching its initial operational timeline. Despite expectations, the Garbeta-based facility is yet to commence production, 17 months after a projected 18-20 month start.

Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly's ambitious Rs 2,500 crore steel plant project in West Bengal is approaching a significant milestone, yet remains to commence production. Nearly 17 months after Ganguly stated the greenfield facility would become operational within 18-20 months, the Garbeta-based integrated steel plant has not yet begun commercial operations.

Project Details and Partnership

The integrated steel plant is being developed in Garbeta, located in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district. This venture is a partnership with Captain Steel, a prominent TMT bar manufacturer in eastern India. Once operational, the facility is projected to achieve an annual production capacity of 0.8 million tonnes (8 lakh tonnes), marking it as Ganguly's largest undertaking in the steel sector.

Timeline and Challenges

The steel plant was first announced by Ganguly in September 2023 during an investment outreach trip to Madrid, Spain, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Initially planned for Salboni, the project location was later shifted to nearby Garbeta following the non-materialization of a previous JSW Steel plant proposal there.

In February 2025, Ganguly had indicated an 18 to 20-month timeframe for the plant to become operational. As of July 2026, approximately 17 months have passed, and production has not begun. No new public timeline has been announced for its commercial launch.

Ganguly had previously highlighted the inherent complexities of establishing steel plants, noting the extensive time required for construction and commissioning. He emphasized the necessity of obtaining multiple statutory approvals, including crucial environmental and pollution clearances, before operations could commence. At the time of his 2025 statement, land acquisition for the approximately 350-acre site was also still in progress.

Economic Impact and Ganguly's Business Ventures

Upon becoming operational, the Garbeta facility is expected to significantly boost Captain Steel's total installed capacity to nearly 1.3 million tonnes annually. The project is also anticipated to be a major job creator, with an initial projection of around 6,000 direct jobs in its first phase, with further employment growth expected as production expands.

While widely known for his illustrious cricketing career, Sourav Ganguly has maintained a connection with the steel industry for almost two decades. He began investing in the business in 2007, even while still an active international cricketer. His previous manufacturing units were established in Asansol and Patna. The upcoming Garbeta plant represents his third and most substantial steel project.

Beyond steel, Ganguly has diversified his investment portfolio, backing various startups. These include the inter-city food delivery platform JustMyRoots, the edtech firm Classplus, and the digital advertising technology company Flickstree, underscoring his expanding presence in the business and entrepreneurial landscape.
