Tata Sons Board to Discuss Chairman Chandrasekaran's Exit on September 17

· · 2 min read

The Tata Sons board is scheduled to convene on September 17 to deliberate the potential departure of Chairman N Chandrasekaran. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has already begun succession planning after Chandrasekaran opted not to seek a third term.

The board of Tata Sons is expected to meet on September 17, with the potential exit of Chairman N Chandrasekaran high on the agenda. This crucial gathering follows Chandrasekaran's decision not to pursue a third term at the helm of the salt-to-software conglomerate, a move that has already prompted the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) to initiate succession mechanisms.

Succession Planning Underway

Chandrasekaran, who first assumed the role of Chairman in February 2017 after leading Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), was reappointed for his second five-year term in February 2022. As his current tenure approaches its conclusion, the upcoming board meeting is anticipated to formalize the next steps for a stable leadership transition across the Tata Group's diverse operating entities.

Formation of a Selection Committee

Earlier this month, Chandrasekaran publicly stated his intention not to seek another term. This was swiftly followed by a resolution from the SDTT to establish a selection committee tasked with recommending a new Chairman. In accordance with Tata Sons' Articles of Association, both Sir Ratan Tata Trusts (SRTT) and SDTT will jointly nominate three members to this five-member committee. The remaining two members will comprise one nominee from Tata Sons itself and one external expert.

Beyond the Chairman's succession, the board will also need to decide on Chandrasekaran's reappointment as a Tata Sons Director. His decision not to extend his chairmanship has brought renewed focus on an ongoing power tussle within the Tata Group and raised questions about long-term leadership continuity at a pivotal time for the diversified business empire.
