Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, is slated to receive Israel’s prestigious Presidential Award for Civil Heroism. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the honor, acknowledging Machchhar's pivotal role in preventing what authorities have classified as an attempted terrorist attack aboard a flydubai flight last week.
Bravery Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073
The incident occurred on flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers. During the flight, the co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar with a crash axe inside the cockpit, attempting to seize control of the aircraft.
Following the attack, the plane transmitted emergency signals and executed a rapid descent, dropping over 17,000 feet from an altitude of 34,000 feet. Captain Machchhar's actions were critical in stabilizing the situation before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
President Herzog Praises Heroism
President Herzog made the announcement in Jerusalem while presenting the Presidential Medal for Civilian Heroism to six Israeli passengers who also played crucial roles in thwarting the alleged hijacking attempt. Herzog specifically praised Captain Machchhar, stating, “Captain Machchhar’s courage, bravery and professionalism helped prevent this catastrophe.”
He added that it would be an honor to personally present the award to Machchhar once the pilot has fully recovered from his injuries. The Presidential Medal for Civilian Heroism was established by Herzog following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack to recognize civilians who demonstrate extraordinary courage in saving lives.
Six Israeli Passengers Also Honored
Alongside Captain Machchhar, six Israeli passengers were recognized for their decisive actions during the mid-air crisis. These individuals include Tali Manes, Zvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Dr. Shota Musayev, Asaf Rajuan, and Or Pardilov. Tali Manes was credited with raising the initial alarm, while Hayoun, Zvika Manes, Pardilov, and Rajuan assisted in subduing the co-pilot. Dr. Musayev provided immediate medical attention to the injured pilot.
Pilot's Recovery and Prior Recognition
Captain Machchhar sustained serious injuries during the struggle and is currently recovering at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. India's Ministry of External Affairs confirmed his stable condition, stating that he is recuperating well and responding positively to treatment, with the Indian embassy in the UAE maintaining close contact with him and his family.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also spoken to Captain Machchhar during his initial treatment, commending his bravery. Netanyahu extended an invitation to the Indian pilot and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day event, an honor typically reserved for Israeli citizens.
