The Portfolio Management Services (PMS) industry in India is undergoing a significant transformation in its approach to financial compliance, moving beyond traditional one-time Know Your Customer (KYC) checks to embrace continuous anti-money laundering (AML) monitoring.
This strategic shift is driven by the dynamic nature of investor risk profiles, which can evolve considerably after initial onboarding. Factors such as new sanctions listings, associations with politically exposed persons (PEPs), or adverse media developments necessitate ongoing scrutiny to mitigate potential financial risks effectively.
InPro Platform Launched for Enhanced AML Compliance
To support this industry-wide evolution, KFin Technologies and the Association of Portfolio Managers in India (APMI) officially launched InPro on October 1. InPro is a comprehensive AML and compliance operations platform designed specifically for the Indian PMS sector.
The platform’s introduction was marked by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey at APMI’s third annual conference, held in Mumbai. APMI has adopted InPro as a central compliance solution, providing its member portfolio managers with shared access to sophisticated technology infrastructure for AML screening and alert management.
Key Features of InPro
InPro integrates several critical functions into a single, streamlined platform:
- Comprehensive Screening: It allows PMS firms to screen investor profiles against global sanctions lists, Indian debarment lists, PEP databases, regulatory watchlists, and adverse media sources.
- Continuous Monitoring: Beyond initial onboarding, the platform conducts ongoing screening when key customer information changes or new risk indicators emerge.
- Case Management: Potential matches are routed through a robust Maker-Checker workflow, enabling compliance teams to investigate alerts, identify false positives, escalate complex cases, and meticulously document their decisions.
- Audit Trails: InPro maintains historical records of all screening activities, alerts, review actions, and decisions, creating an audit-ready trail essential for regulatory and internal compliance reviews.
This initiative aims to address the varying capacities of SEBI-registered portfolio managers to invest in dedicated compliance technology. By offering a common technological backbone, InPro provides economies of scale, particularly benefiting smaller and mid-sized PMS firms that might otherwise struggle to build and maintain sophisticated AML systems independently.
Ultimately, the adoption of InPro is expected to foster greater consistency in how potential AML risks are screened, reviewed, documented, and escalated across the entire PMS ecosystem, marking a crucial step towards more resilient financial crime prevention.
