State Bank of India (SBI), the country's largest lender, has announced a temporary disruption to its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services. The outage is scheduled for the early hours of Saturday, October 3, 2026, to facilitate essential system maintenance.
Maintenance Window Details
According to an official advisory from SBI, UPI services will be unavailable from 00:15 hrs to 01:00 hrs IST on October 3, 2026. This 45-minute window is critical for the bank to carry out scheduled maintenance activities. While the bank noted the activity may conclude earlier, customers should anticipate the full duration of the disruption.
During this period, customers attempting to make UPI payments from their SBI accounts, or via SBI's dedicated apps like YONO and BHIM SBI Pay, may encounter failed transactions or pending statuses. The disruption is strictly limited to the specified time slot and is not expected to impact other digital banking channels outside of this maintenance window.
Alternatives for Urgent Transactions
SBI has proactively suggested alternatives for customers needing to make urgent payments during the downtime:
- UPI Lite: This service is specifically designed for small-value, high-frequency transactions and operates like an on-wallet balance within supported UPI applications. UPI Lite allows transactions up to ₹1,000 per payment without requiring a UPI PIN, and it can process payments instantly even when regular UPI rails are under maintenance. Customers can load funds into UPI Lite via the BHIM SBI Pay app or other compatible UPI platforms before the outage begins. The daily transaction cap for UPI Lite from the loaded balance is ₹5,000.
- ATMs: For cash withdrawals and balance enquiries, ATMs will remain fully functional throughout the maintenance period, offering a reliable option for immediate cash needs.
Planning Ahead
Customers are strongly encouraged to complete any time-sensitive UPI payments before 00:15 hrs on October 3 or to wait until services are fully restored after 01:00 hrs. SBI expressed regret for the inconvenience caused but emphasized the necessity of the maintenance for enhancing service reliability.
