UAE Asserts Jurisdiction Over Flydubai Cockpit Attack Investigation

· · 2 min read

The United Arab Emirates has asserted its jurisdiction over the investigation into a cockpit attack on a flydubai flight to Tel Aviv, citing the aircraft's UAE registration. The incident involved the co-pilot allegedly stabbing the captain, leading to an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The United Arab Emirates has officially declared its jurisdiction over the ongoing investigation into a dramatic cockpit attack aboard a flydubai flight to Tel Aviv. The UAE Foreign Ministry stated that its judicial authorities have the right to investigate the incident because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and operates under its flag.

The incident occurred on Wednesday aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the flight, an altercation erupted in the cockpit, reportedly involving the co-pilot, an Omani national, who allegedly stabbed the captain, Smit Macchhar, an Indian national.

Captain's Heroism and Emergency Landing

Despite being seriously injured, Captain Macchhar fought back and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene and overpower the attacker. The aircraft was subsequently diverted and made a safe emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where the co-pilot was taken into custody.

Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have praised Captain Macchhar's bravery, with Netanyahu stating that the captain's actions prevented a "catastrophic mid-air disaster." The flight was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children.

Investigation Details and International Cooperation

The UAE Attorney-General, Counsellor Dr. Hamad Al Shamsi, has ordered a specialized team of Public Prosecution officials to investigate the incident. The probe will examine the circumstances and motives, including any potential links to terrorist activity or intent, and whether there was any prior planning.

While flydubai and the UAE have described the event as an "altercation," Israeli authorities have openly referred to it as a suspected attempted terror attack. The UAE Foreign Ministry emphasized that under applicable law, UAE jurisdiction extends to crimes committed on board its registered aircraft, even outside its territory. The ministry also thanked Saudi authorities for their swift cooperation and handling of the incident, urging the public to rely on official information as the investigation proceeds.
