The Indian government's flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has surpassed a significant milestone, with over 50.06 lakh rooftop solar installations completed across the country. This achievement, announced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), highlights India's accelerated transition towards clean energy and widespread household solar adoption.
Scheme Progress and Financial Impact
Launched two years ago, the ₹75,021 crore initiative aims to provide households with rooftop solar systems, offering substantial subsidy support and up to 300 units of free electricity each month. This has enabled numerous families to significantly reduce, and in many cases, entirely eliminate their monthly electricity bills. The program also empowers households to generate additional income by selling excess electricity back to the grid.
The pace of installations has dramatically increased recently. Daily rooftop solar installations surged 3.2 times, climbing from 5,038 in October 2025 to approximately 16,328 by July 2026. July alone saw 5.06 lakh new rooftop solar systems installed, marking the highest monthly figure recorded under the scheme to date.
Financial support has been substantial, with the government disbursing ₹28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Nearly 19 lakh families have successfully reduced their electricity bills to zero. In the fiscal year 2024-25, over 12 lakh households collectively earned ₹421 crore by selling surplus solar power, averaging an annual income of around ₹3,500 per family.
Capacity Expansion and Skill Development
The MNRE further reported that concessional loans have been approved for 21.87 lakh applicants, facilitating the completion of 17.5 lakh rooftop solar installations. Overall, the PM Surya Ghar scheme has contributed 14.8 GW to India's rooftop solar capacity. Beyond installations, the program has fostered a robust ecosystem, establishing a network of 34,219 registered vendors (with 29,469 currently active) and training more than 2.32 lakh individuals to support its implementation.

- Visit the Official Portal: Navigate to the official website at consumer.pmsuryaghar.gov.in to begin the registration process.
- Register Your Profile: Enter your mobile number, verify it with an OTP, and fill in personal details such as name, state, and district. Add and verify your email ID, then save your profile.
- Choose Application Method: The portal will ask if you prefer a registered vendor to complete the application on your behalf. Select “Yes” for vendor assistance or “No” to proceed independently.
- Apply for a Rooftop Solar System: Click on “Apply for Solar Rooftop,” select your state, district, DISCOM, and consumer number. Use “Fetch Details” to auto-fill electricity connection information before submitting.
- Await Feasibility Approval: Your application will be assessed by the concerned DISCOM to determine the technical feasibility of rooftop solar installation.
- Select a Registered Vendor: Upon receiving approval, choose a registered vendor from the portal and submit your bank account details for subsidy transfer.
- Get the System Installed: The selected vendor will install the rooftop solar system and provide installation details before submitting them to the DISCOM.
- DISCOM Inspection: The DISCOM will inspect the installed system and update the inspection details on the portal.
- Claim the Subsidy: Once the inspection is successfully completed, submit your subsidy claim to the National Programme Implementation Agency (NPIA) via the portal.
- Receive the Subsidy: After approval, the subsidy amount is credited directly to your registered bank account, typically within 30 days.
