Iran Exempts India, China, Iraq, Qatar from Strait of Hormuz Shipping Rules

· · 2 min read

Iran has lifted transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz for commercial vessels from India, China, Iraq, and Qatar. The move aims to facilitate trade, including medicine imports for Tehran from India, amid ongoing regional shipping disruptions.

Iran has announced exemptions from transit restrictions in the strategic Strait of Hormuz for commercial ships from India, China, Iraq, and Qatar. This decision, confirmed by Amir Hayat Moghadam, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, allows vessels from these four nations to pass through the vital waterway.

According to Moghadam, the exemptions are driven by Iran's national interests and its relationships with the respective countries. For India, the allowance is crucial for Tehran to import essential medicines. China's exemption is aimed at securing Beijing's political support on the international stage. Qatari ships are permitted free passage without charges, while Indian and Chinese vessels will still incur transit fees.

Context of Regional Shipping Disruptions

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow channel connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, typically facilitates approximately 20% of global energy supplies. However, shipping through this critical choke point has faced severe disruptions since February, following joint attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, which triggered retaliatory strikes from Tehran.

In response to the escalating conflict, Iran had previously imposed restrictions, allowing only select vessels through the strait. Concurrently, Washington implemented a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The ongoing tensions have had tragic consequences, with at least 15 Indian seafarers reportedly killed in attacks on ships since the conflict began. The latest incident involved an Indian sailor who died after an attack on the commercial vessel MSV Al Jusufi near Limah, Oman.

India has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the conflict, expressing deep concern over attacks on commercial shipping and calling for an immediate end to the targeting of civilian infrastructure and vessels. New Delhi has also demanded the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
