The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) initiated the first phase of its NPS Sanchay Pension Yatra on October 1, 2026, coinciding with NPS Diwas. This nationwide campaign aims to significantly expand pension awareness and access, particularly for underserved populations.
Pension Yatra Flagged Off Across India
The inaugural phase of the NPS Sanchay Pension Yatra saw four separate yatras simultaneously flagged off from key cities: Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Each yatra is scheduled to traverse districts within its respective State or Union Territory over a 15-day period. The PFRDA has ambitious plans to organize an additional 12 such yatras over the next six months, underscoring its commitment to a broader pension-awareness program.
What is NPS Sanchay?
NPS Sanchay is a streamlined version of the National Pension System (NPS), specifically designed to cater to individuals in the informal and self-employed sectors, as well as first-time investors who may find complex investment choices daunting. This simplified structure removes the initial challenge of selecting investment options and asset allocation.
Under NPS Sanchay, subscribers are automatically provided with a predefined investment pattern upon opening their account. This default pattern mirrors the investment strategy used for Central and State Government NPS subscribers, allocating 75% of contributions to government securities and corporate bonds, with the remaining 25% invested in equity. Subscribers retain the flexibility to modify their investment pattern later, based on their evolving requirements.
Who Can Open an NPS Sanchay Account?
NPS Sanchay is accessible to Indian citizens aged between 18 and 85 years. Opening an account requires an initial contribution of just ₹250, with subsequent contributions starting from as low as ₹10. A significant feature of NPS Sanchay is the absence of a mandatory minimum annual contribution, which makes it particularly suitable for individuals with irregular or seasonal incomes, allowing them to contribute according to their financial capacity and without penalty.
How to Open an NPS Sanchay Account
Prospective subscribers have multiple convenient channels to open an NPS Sanchay account, including online platforms, banks, Points of Presence (PoPs), and Common Service Centres (CSCs). During the ongoing Pension Yatra, PFRDA teams are actively providing information about NPS Sanchay and facilitating easy access to the NPS through 'Tatkal NPS' and other assisted channels, bringing pension planning directly to communities.
PFRDA's Broader Awareness Efforts
The Pension Yatra forms a crucial part of PFRDA's extensive efforts to enhance pension awareness by engaging directly with communities, workplaces, local markets, and districts. The authority reported conducting 60 outreach programs over the past nine months and has planned another 80 programs for the current year, highlighting its sustained commitment to securing India's retirement future.
