Meta Engineer Earning $300K Annually Opts for Simple Lifestyle, Prioritizing Investments

A 24-year-old Meta software engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area, earning over $300,000 annually, maintains a minimalist lifestyle. Raymond Zeng prioritizes investing for early retirement and experiences over accumulating material possessions, saving a significant portion of his income monthly.

A 24-year-old software engineer at Meta, Raymond Zeng, has garnered attention for his highly disciplined financial approach, opting for a remarkably simple lifestyle despite an annual income exceeding $300,000 (approximately ₹2.9 crore). Based in the high-cost San Francisco Bay Area, Zeng's choices stand in stark contrast to typical spending habits among high-earning tech professionals.

Prioritizing Financial Independence Over Material Possessions

Zeng, who relocated to the Bay Area eight months ago after two years in Dallas, has intentionally cultivated a minimalist living environment. His apartment is sparsely furnished, lacking a television, and even a couch. He does not own a car, relying instead on walking, public transportation, and Meta's company shuttle service, significantly reducing his commuting expenses.

Friends often describe his lifestyle as "Spartan," a label Zeng embraces as a conscious financial decision. He told Business Insider that his priority is to funnel his earnings into investments, travel, and hobbies rather than filling his home with items he rarely uses. "I think a big part of personal finance is choosing where to spend money and where not to," Zeng stated, emphasizing his preference for long-term financial goals.

Aggressive Savings and Investment Strategy

Despite his substantial total compensation, which includes bonuses and stock options, Zeng's regular monthly income typically ranges between $7,000 and $8,000 (₹6.8 lakh to ₹7.7 lakh). From this, he manages to save an impressive $5,000 to $20,000 per month (₹4.8 lakh to ₹19.4 lakh). A major portion of these savings is consistently directed into retirement and various investment accounts, supplemented by additional investments in stock markets via brokerage accounts.

Zeng's investment portfolio is predominantly focused on US stocks, accounting for roughly 80% of his holdings, with the remaining 20% allocated to international markets. His ambitious financial objective is to retire around the age of 30, a goal he acknowledges involves many dynamic factors.

Budgeting in a High-Cost Region

Living in one of the most expensive regions globally, Zeng carefully manages his expenditures. He pays $2,600 monthly (around ₹2.5 lakh) for a one-bedroom apartment, which he considers reasonably priced for the area. His choice of neighborhood was strategic, ensuring easy access to amenities like cafes, grocery stores, and public transport.

His living room serves a dual purpose as both a workspace and hobby area, eliminating the perceived need for additional furniture or a television. His bedroom is equally understated, containing only essential items such as a bed, bedding, and a filing cabinet that doubles as a bedside table.

However, Zeng admitted to one notable indulgence: a $400 bidet (approximately ₹39,000). He views this purchase as a worthwhile "quality-of-life upgrade," demonstrating a selective approach to spending that aligns with personal value rather than societal expectations.
