JSW Greentech Launches Ampstar EV Brand with 55-Tonne Tractor-Trailer, New Buses

· · 3 min read

JSW Greentech has launched its new Ampstar electric commercial vehicle brand, unveiling a 55-tonne tractor-trailer and three EV bus models. The company aims to offer full-stack mobility solutions for India's electric transport sector.

JSW Greentech, the commercial electric vehicle arm of the JSW Group, has officially entered India’s electric mobility market with the launch of its new brand, AMPSTAR. The brand, endorsed as “AMPSTAR: powered by JSW,” will focus on designing, manufacturing, and selling electric buses and trucks across India, complemented by a comprehensive suite of support services.

Ampstar Electric Vehicles Unveiled

At its launch event, JSW Greentech showcased a formidable 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, marking its entry into heavy-duty electric logistics. Alongside this, three new electric bus models were unveiled: a 9-meter city bus, a 12-meter city bus, and a 12-meter staff bus. The company plans to expand its truck range in the coming months to include tippers and fixed-body dumpers, while its bus portfolio will eventually cover lengths from 7 meters to 18 meters for various applications, including staff, city, intercity, and school transport.

AMPSTAR will offer power configurations ranging from 150 kW to 500 kW. Customers will have flexible ownership options, including outright purchase, leasing, and Battery as a Service (BaaS).

Integrated Manufacturing and Technology

The manufacturing operations for the Ampstar electric vehicles will be housed at JSW Greentech’s sprawling 90-acre integrated EV facility in AURIC, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. This state-of-the-art plant boasts an annual production capacity of 15,000 electric buses and trucks.

The facility is set to feature India’s first pre-treatment and electro-deposition (PT-ED) process for bus manufacturing, a technology widely adopted in advanced automotive markets. It will also incorporate an automated truck-cabin line and a fully integrated battery ecosystem, emphasizing vertical integration and advanced production capabilities.

Engineered for Indian Conditions

JSW Greentech has undertaken extensive in-house engineering to tailor its vehicles for specific Indian operating conditions. The company developed the foundational logic, software, and algorithms for the entire electric drivetrain, allowing for customisation to meet diverse customer requirements. The vehicles will feature a double cooling battery system and a high-strength monocoque chassis, designed to withstand India’s varied climate and road infrastructure.

Vision for Electric Commercial Mobility

Speaking at the launch, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal articulated a vision for electric commercial mobility as a critical component of national development. “When we decided to enter electric commercial mobility, I saw it as an act of nation-building moving India's people and goods on power generated within India, rather than fuel sourced from outside,” Jindal stated. He emphasised that while sentiment is important, the ultimate success hinges on the economic viability for every customer making the transition to electric buses and trucks.

Parth Jindal, from the JSW Group, highlighted extensive research indicating that barriers to electric vehicle adoption extend beyond just the vehicle itself. This insight led JSW Greentech to develop a “full-stack commercial mobility solution,” encompassing charging infrastructure, financing options, operating solutions, and robust after-sales support to ensure a seamless customer journey.

Sumit Mittal, CEO of JSW Greentech Limited, confirmed that the vehicles are being developed in India “from the ground up,” including the proprietary drivetrain and software. He added that the initial focus would be on the 55-tonne tractor-trailer, which he described as “one of the most demanding vehicle architectures,” before expanding into other truck segments. “India deserves world-class buses and trucks on its own roads, and AMPSTAR is how we deliver that,” Mittal concluded.
