Sonia Gandhi: Indira Regretted 1975 Emergency, Called it a 'Mistake'

· · 3 min read

Sonia Gandhi's upcoming memoir reveals Indira Gandhi eventually regretted imposing the 1975 Emergency, describing it as a 'mistake.' The controversial period also caused deep divisions within the Gandhi family.

In revelations from her upcoming memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has described the imposition of the 1975 Emergency as a mistake, stating her belief that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi eventually regretted the decision. Sonia Gandhi also recounts how the controversial measure created significant tensions within the Gandhi family.

Indira Gandhi's Private Discomfort

Speaking to The Guardian, Sonia Gandhi indicated that her mother-in-law, despite authorizing the Emergency, was deeply uncomfortable with it. She expressed her conviction that Indira Gandhi was a democrat at heart, saying, "I know that many would laugh at this, but I believe she was never comfortable in the course of the Emergency. I think it was sitting heavy on her." Sonia Gandhi affirmed her belief that Indira Gandhi later came to recognize the consequences and acknowledged the decision as a mistake.

Family Divisions Over the Emergency

Sonia Gandhi's account further sheds light on disagreements within Indira Gandhi's immediate family. Her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, reportedly opposed the Emergency, advising his mother to await the next general election. In contrast, his younger brother, Sanjay Gandhi, advocated for tougher measures against the opposition. During one family dinner, Sanjay allegedly warned that opposition leaders would "destroy Indira Gandhi" unless they were stopped, urging, "They must be stopped."

Sonia recalled Rajiv attempting to confront Indira over the decision, but she reportedly refused to listen. In her memoir, Sonia suggests that "Keeping Sanjay in check could have prevented much of the damage that followed."

Acknowledging Excesses and Public Regret

In a separate interview with The Hindu, Sonia Gandhi stated that hindsight had provided her with a clearer understanding of the political circumstances surrounding the Emergency. She highlighted that Indira Gandhi herself later publicly expressed regret and apologized for the excesses committed during the period. However, Sonia clarified that Sanjay Gandhi was not solely responsible, noting that several senior Congress leaders had pressured Indira, while few, including Rajiv, voiced opposing views.

The 1975 Emergency: A Brief Overview

The Emergency was imposed by Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, leading to severe restrictions on civil liberties, political opposition, and press freedom across India. The period saw the suspension of habeas corpus protections and the widespread arrest of opposition leaders.

On January 18, 1977, Indira Gandhi announced fresh elections. The Congress party subsequently suffered a major defeat, and the Emergency officially concluded on March 21, 1977. Sonia Gandhi's disclosures arrive amidst ongoing political debate surrounding the Emergency, which the ruling BJP has consistently characterized as a dark chapter in Indian democracy.
