Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the new terminal at Jodhpur Airport, a significant infrastructure development costing ₹480 crore. This expansive facility, spanning over 23,000 square meters, is engineered to accommodate up to 20 lakh passengers annually, marking a major upgrade in the region's aviation capabilities. The inauguration coincided with the launch of the Modified UDAN scheme, a revised regional connectivity initiative.

The new Jodhpur Airport terminal stands as a testament to blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary functionality. Its architectural design draws inspiration from Rajasthan's royal heritage, featuring intricate arches and jharokhas that complement a modern layout. Beyond its visual appeal, the terminal incorporates advanced energy-saving systems and comprehensive water conservation measures. Designed with green building practices, it aims to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Enhanced Regional Connectivity and Passenger Experience
Operating as a single integrated domestic terminal, the upgraded Jodhpur Airport significantly enhances regional air connectivity. It provides direct links to major Indian hubs including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Ahmedabad. Passengers can expect a seamless and comfortable travel experience, thanks to the array of modern amenities integrated throughout the facility.
Parking and Accessibility
The airport offers convenient on-site, open-air parking directly outside the passenger building. A free zone in front of the terminal gates allows private vehicles to drop off or pick up passengers within a 10-minute window. Short-term parking for private cars, SUVs, and tempos is available at a flat rate of ₹20 for up to 30 minutes, with standard multi-hour rates ranging from ₹25 to ₹35. For travelers requiring extended parking, the terminal does not offer overnight or multi-day options; instead, they are advised to use the secure 24/7 multi-day lot at the nearby Jodhpur Railway Station (₹50/day) and take a short taxi ride.
Reaching the airport is facilitated by various transport options. App-based services like Uber and Ola operate up to the terminal boundaries, while local auto-rickshaws are readily available just outside the main airport perimeter gates. Prepaid and standard airport transfers offer direct, point-to-point services, with sedans (e.g., Swift Dzire) typically costing around ₹500 for standard hotel routes across town, and SUVs (e.g., Toyota Innova) ranging from ₹600–₹750. Full-day sightseeing rentals, ideal for direct trips to attractions like Mehrangarh Fort, are available from ₹1,600–₹2,500 for 8–12 hours. Reputable local operators such as Yellow Taxi Service, The Jodhpur Taxi Service, and Jain Taxi Service operate along Civil Airport Road.
Boosting Regional Growth: The Modified UDAN Scheme
Officials anticipate that the new Jodhpur Airport terminal will be a catalyst for economic growth, significantly boosting tourism, trade, investment, and employment opportunities in the region. Its inauguration, coupled with the launch of the Modified UDAN scheme, underscores a national focus on expanding regional air infrastructure.
The Modified UDAN scheme represents a revamped regional connectivity plan slated for the next decade, backed by an outlay of ₹28,840 crore. Its primary objective is to elevate regional air connectivity and accelerate aviation-led development across India. Under this scheme, 100 new aerodromes are planned to be developed from existing unserved airstrips, with an allocation exceeding ₹12,000 crore. An additional ₹2,500 crore has been earmarked for Operations and Maintenance support for these regional airports. Furthermore, the plan includes the development of 200 modern helipads to improve connectivity in remote and challenging terrains. Airlines operating regional routes will continue to receive Viability Gap Funding (VGF) totaling over ₹10,000 crore, designed to sustain operations and enhance commercial viability, ensuring the long-term success of regional air travel initiatives.
