Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially opened the Dharavi Experience Centre on Thursday, providing residents with an interactive preview of the extensive redevelopment planned for the neighborhood. The 22,500-square-foot facility, inaugurated on Gandhi Jayanti, aims to demystify the complex urban transformation project for its more than one million residents.
A Glimpse into the Future of Dharavi
The newly unveiled Experience Centre leverages a variety of multimedia tools to illustrate the proposed township. Visitors can explore life-size housing models, engage with digital displays, and take a detailed 3D walkthrough of the future layout. The center's primary goal is to help residents understand how new housing, livelihood opportunities, public amenities, transport infrastructure, and green spaces will integrate within the redevelopment plan.
During the inauguration ceremony, CM Fadnavis also launched an anthem dedicated to Dharavi and released a coffee table book celebrating the neighborhood's rich history and its vibrant community, often recognized as one of Asia’s largest informal settlements.
Interactive Exhibits and Sample Homes
A key feature of the Experience Centre is its collection of life-size sample homes. Residents can walk through both unfurnished and fully furnished 350-square-foot and 500-square-foot apartments. This hands-on experience allows them to visualize and understand the proposed living spaces and their potential utilization.
Beyond individual homes, a comprehensive 3D walkthrough offers a broader perspective of the entire proposed township. This includes residential and commercial zones, road networks, public transport links, essential public amenities, and designated open spaces. Interactive exhibits also delve into Dharavi's historical narrative and highlight the entrepreneurial spirit and diverse businesses that have shaped its identity and significantly contributed to Mumbai’s economy.
Comprehensive Redevelopment Vision
The redevelopment blueprint emphasizes maintaining the unique synergy between homes and livelihoods that defines Dharavi. It also includes provisions for crucial social infrastructure such as schools, healthcare facilities, places of worship, and parks.
A significant component of the plan is a Multimodal Transport Hub, designed to consolidate various modes of transport and enhance connectivity for both Dharavi residents and the wider Mumbai population. Environmental sustainability is also a core focus, with proposed initiatives including the rejuvenation of the Mithi River, the planting of approximately 40,000 trees across Dharavi, and the creation of a 3.3-kilometer public riverfront, complemented by additional parks and open recreational areas.
To ensure transparency and accessibility, the center provides both digital and assisted channels. Residents can access vital information regarding surveys, eligibility criteria, required documentation, and rehabilitation processes, empowering them with a clear understanding of the provisions linked to their homes and livelihoods under the redevelopment scheme.
