Jio Platforms IPO: Can Akash Ambani Repeat Dhirubhai Ambani's Legacy of Investor Wealth?

· · 3 min read

Jio Platforms' ₹30,213 crore IPO was fully subscribed in 100 minutes, setting a new record for Indian mega-IPOs. Investors are now questioning if Akash Ambani can replicate his grandfather Dhirubhai's long-term wealth creation for shareholders.

Jio Platforms' recent initial public offering (IPO) has captivated India's financial markets, raising ₹30,213 crore and achieving full subscription in just 100 minutes on October 21. This rapid uptake set a new benchmark for mega-IPOs in the country, surpassing even Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870 crore issue. The impressive demand, particularly from qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) and global investors like BlackRock and Fidelity, highlights the market's enthusiasm for the digital giant.

Echoes of a Legacy: Dhirubhai Ambani's Investor Revolution

Nearly five decades ago, Dhirubhai Ambani, Akash Ambani's grandfather, transformed India's investment landscape with the 1977 IPO of Reliance Textile Industries. That offering, which raised ₹2.8 crore from 58,000 shareholders, laid the groundwork for a mass-investor culture, inviting ordinary Indians to participate in corporate growth. Reliance's subsequent expansion into diverse sectors like petrochemicals and energy delivered substantial long-term wealth for its early backers, forging a strong bond between the company and its growing shareholder base.

Jio's Digital Dominance and Financial Health

Since its launch in 2016, Jio Platforms has revolutionized India's telecom sector, driving mobile internet adoption through affordable data and voice services. As of June 2026, the company boasts 533.3 million customers. For the fiscal year 2026, Jio reported robust financials: revenue of ₹1,46,885 crore, EBITDA of ₹76,255 crore, and a profit after tax of ₹30,049 crore, with an impressive EBITDA margin of 51.91%.

Beyond its core telecom operations, Jio is strategically expanding into managed digital solutions, cloud and connectivity services, cybersecurity, and AI-enabled applications. These ventures are expected to generate new revenue streams, while potential tariff increases and higher average revenue per user (ARPU) could further strengthen its primary business. Brokerages generally view Jio positively, with some estimating that a 15% tariff hike alone could significantly boost per-share value.

The Path Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges

The Jio Platforms IPO, priced between ₹1,065 and ₹1,119 per share, values the company at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore at the upper end. Retail investors could apply for a minimum of 12 shares, costing ₹13,428. The offering closed on October 23, with allotment tentatively scheduled for October 26 and listing on October 28. A significant portion of the raised capital, up to ₹27,500 crore, is earmarked for repaying or prepaying borrowings of its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, with the remainder for general corporate purposes.

However, the investment landscape today is vastly different from Dhirubhai Ambani's era. Jio enters a more mature and intensely competitive market. While its digital ambitions offer considerable growth potential, investors must critically assess whether these opportunities can translate into earnings that justify the current valuation and replicate the extraordinary long-term wealth creation seen with Reliance Industries decades ago.
