ICICI Life Launches Pension Plan Mixing Guaranteed Income with Market-Linked Growth

· · 3 min read

ICICI Life Insurance has introduced its Guaranteed Indexed Pension Plan, combining lifelong guaranteed annuity income with a variable component tied to the NIFTY 50 Total Return Index. Policyholders can customize the proportion of guaranteed income.

ICICI Life Insurance has unveiled its latest offering, the ICICI Life Guaranteed Indexed Pension plan, designed to provide retirees with a dual approach to retirement income. This innovative product blends a component of lifelong guaranteed annuity income with a variable portion linked to the performance of the NIFTY 50 Total Return Index (TRI).

Flexible Income Streams for Retirement

The new pension plan allows policyholders significant flexibility in managing their retirement finances. Customers can choose to have between 60% and 100% of their annuity income guaranteed, with the remaining percentage exposed to market-linked returns via the NIFTY 50 TRI. This structure enables individuals to balance income certainty with the potential for growth, depending on their risk tolerance and financial goals.

Annuity payouts can be received monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annually, catering to diverse financial needs. The plan is available for both single-life and joint-life options, and includes a return-of-purchase-price feature, ensuring that upon the death of the annuitant(s), the nominee receives a death benefit as per policy terms.

Additional Features and Considerations

Beyond its core income structure, the ICICI Life Guaranteed Indexed Pension plan incorporates an 'Annuity Advance' facility. This feature offers liquidity by allowing eligible policyholders to opt for a lump-sum payment in place of a portion of future guaranteed annuity income. This advance can cover up to 50% of total premiums paid, for guaranteed annuities over the next one to five years, subject to specific conditions.

The product also offers access to health management and wellness services while the policy remains active and eligibility criteria are met.

What Should Investors Evaluate?

Prospective policyholders should carefully consider the balance between guaranteed income and market-linked exposure. While a higher guaranteed annuity proportion offers greater income certainty, allocating a portion to the NIFTY 50 TRI introduces variability alongside potential upside. Investors must understand that index-linked income is not a guaranteed market return.

It is crucial for buyers to review the policy brochure thoroughly to comprehend how the variable annuity is calculated, applicable conditions, charges, and the potential impact of market performance on payouts. The return-of-purchase-price feature and joint-life option are particularly relevant for those looking to provide for a spouse or other eligible family member, but their specific payout structures and death-benefit provisions should be assessed meticulously before committing retirement savings.

Vikas Gupta, Chief Product Officer at ICICI Life Insurance, emphasized that the plan aims to support individuals in planning for longer retirements amidst rising living expenses and evolving financial priorities. This launch underscores a growing industry focus on retirement products that combine income stability with market-linked growth opportunities, with suitability ultimately depending on individual needs and risk profiles.
