Indian Markets Face Cautious Start Amid Elevated Crude, Geopolitical Tensions

· · 3 min read

Indian equity markets are set for a negative opening on Monday, with GIFT Nifty down 57 points. Elevated crude oil prices and ongoing US-Iran tensions are key factors influencing investor sentiment.

Indian equity markets are poised for a cautious start today, Monday, August 17, 2026, as indicated by a 57-point drop in GIFT Nifty Futures on the NSE International Exchange. The subdued sentiment is largely attributed to persistently high crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly between the US and Iran.

Global Cues and Market Drivers

Brent crude remained stable at $88.50 a barrel following a 6 percent increase last week, while US crude saw a slight dip to $82.12. The lack of resolution in the Iran conflict continues to keep oil prices elevated, prompting US President Donald Trump to warn Americans of sustained high fuel costs.

Asian markets showed a mixed performance on Monday. South Korea's KOSPI rose 2.5 percent, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.6 percent, while Japan's Nikkei remained largely flat. US stocks closed mixed on Friday, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average all experiencing marginal declines after weaker-than-expected retail sales data.

Market experts, including Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal Financial Services, suggest that Indian equities may remain range-bound in the coming week. Global developments, crude oil fluctuations, and geopolitical risks are expected to be the primary drivers, especially after the conclusion of the Q1FY27 earnings season.

Investor Flows and Market Volatility

Provisional data from the NSE revealed that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net buyers of domestic stocks to the tune of Rs 508.12 crore on Friday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought Rs 356.40 crore. Despite heavy selling in the first two weeks of the month, FPIs invested Rs 16,621 crore in Indian equities during the first half of August 2026.

India VIX, the volatility index, settled at 11.30, indicating relatively subdued volatility. Investors are advised to maintain a stock-specific approach, favoring companies with strong earnings visibility and healthy balance sheets, according to Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking.

Nifty50 Outlook: Key Levels to Watch

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, noted that Nifty formed a negative candle on the weekly chart, signaling a false upside breakout near the 24,500-24,600 levels. Further consolidation is anticipated, with immediate support for Nifty placed around 24,200-24,000 levels. The immediate resistance is seen at 24,500.

Sensex Outlook: Range-Bound with Cautious Bias

The Sensex continues to trade above its 50-Day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) but below its 200-Day EMA, suggesting a range-bound structure with a mixed bias. Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Equity Broking, identifies immediate support for Sensex between 77,400–77,600 and resistance at 78,300–78,500. A “buy-on-dips” strategy is recommended, with a decisive move above 78,300–78,500 needed to strengthen the near-term outlook.

Nifty Bank Outlook: Consolidation Continues

The Nifty Bank index formed a small-body candle, indicating indecision and a continued phase of consolidation, as per Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities. The index remains range-bound between 57,200 and 58,000 levels. Immediate resistance is in the 57,900-58,000 zone, with support at 57,100-57,000. Traders are advised to adopt a levels-based approach until a clear breakout or breakdown emerges.
