India Urges Edible Oil Processors to Lower Retail Prices After Duty Cuts Ahead of Festive Season

· · 2 min read

The Indian government has pressed edible oil processors to reduce retail prices, following recent customs duty cuts on imported crude edible oils. This move aims to provide relief to consumers and combat inflation ahead of the upcoming festive season.

The Indian government has urged edible oil processors to significantly reduce retail prices, following recent cuts in customs duties on imported crude edible oils. This directive comes ahead of the crucial festive season, aiming to provide immediate relief to consumers grappling with high cooking oil costs and to mitigate inflationary pressures.

On September 24, the government implemented substantial reductions in basic customs duties. The duty on crude sunflower oil was entirely eliminated, moving from 10% to nil. Similarly, duties on crude soybean oil and crude palm oil were lowered from 10% to 5%. While these cuts primarily targeted crude oils, the government also adjusted duties on corresponding refined edible oils, ensuring a consistent 19.25% difference in import duty between crude and refined varieties.

Ensuring Benefits Reach Consumers

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra emphasized the urgency of passing on these tax reduction benefits to consumers during the annual meeting of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India in Mumbai. India stands as the world's largest importer of edible oils, making domestic price stability a critical concern for household budgets.

The government's objective is to guarantee an adequate supply of cooking oils at reasonable prices across the country. Higher international edible oil prices have been a key factor driving up domestic costs, and the duty cuts are a direct response to moderate these increases.

Industry Called to Action

Edible oil associations and industry stakeholders have been specifically advised to revise their Price to Distributors and Maximum Retail Prices without delay, reflecting the lower landed costs. This measure is intended to ensure that the full benefit of the duty reductions trickles down through the supply chain to the end consumer.

The government affirmed its commitment to continuously monitor both international edible oil markets and domestic pricing trends. It stated it would take further appropriate measures if necessary, balancing consumer protection with the interests of farmers and the domestic edible oil industry.
